Re: To be biased is correct
This is why racism is a cancer, for instance. People act in a racist fashion because they don't want to get taken advantage of.
They probably won't...but people think it's better to be safe than sorry.
There are limits to everything and even what you do for a good friend stops at eating his meals for him.

Hypothetical ...
I live in Melbourne in an area where young African gangs are running rampant and am well aware of it. I see a group of African males coming towards me and I turn and walk swiftly in the opposite direction. Unconscious bias.
I live in Melbourne and have never heard of young African gangs running rampant. Nothing like this happens. I see a group of African males coming towards me and I turn and walk swiftly in the opposite direction. Conscious bias.

What you call bias, I call stereotyping. Everyone stereotypes, partly because it's innate to fear the "other", and partly to keep us safe.
This first example is stereotyping to keep one safe:

You are fully cognisant that young African gangs in the area are dangerous. There's nothing "unconscious" about it.I live in Melbourne in an area where young African gangs are running rampant and am well aware of it. This is unconscious bias. It is innate in humans because we are tribal at heart, and we steer clear of the unknown, for safety reasons. We learn this from birth.I live in Melbourne and have never heard of young African gangs running rampant. Nothing like this happens. Conscious bias is another thing entirely and usually hinged on prejudice.

Prejudice is a conscious choice so conscious bias is often rooted in prejudice.
Unconscious bias is unconscious and our unconscious feelings play a strong part in our judgments about other people based on intuition, inclinations and/or prejudices for or against other people.
So basically both can be based on prejudice but probably more so with conscious bias.
