Shame shame shame

Post by Black Orchid » Tue Apr 17, 2018 6:12 pm

A young boy has been bitten on the cheek in front of horrified shoppers during a brazen daylight robbery at a Sydney shopping centre.

Deklan Manley, 13, was with a friend at Macquarie Shopping Centre on Herring Road in Sydney's north at about 11.30am yesterday when two men approached him in what police believe to be a random attack.

One of the men threatened him and attempted to steal his shoes before the boy pushed him away.

Deklan was then assaulted and bitten on the cheek.

He managed to escape his attackers and was treated for his injuries at a nearby medical centre.

Police say the "brazen" daylight attack is out of the character for the area.

Police have obtained mobile phone vision of the assault as well as CCTV from the shopping centre and say it is "only a matter of time" before the suspect is caught.

A spokesperson for Macquarie Shopping Centre confirmed the "unfortunate incident", saying the centre's security were on the scene immediately and police were notified.

According to the news, security was NOT on the scene immediately at all. Dozens of onlookers stood around watching and did absolutely nothing. No-one stepped in and no-one called the police or security. The kid who was assaulted had to go and find security himself.

It wasn't just a 'bite' on the cheek either the guy tried to rip the poor kid's cheek right off.

This area has a certain demographic that will never help. They will stand and watch and gawk while you lay dying. They will push and shove to get a bird's eye view but they wouldn't lift a finger.

And all over a pair of shoes

Mainly Chinese. Nice people but like to keep to themselves and watch whatever is going on and never want to get involved.

I'm unfamiliar with the area, but this might assist........appears to be significant Asian population and from what I know in Melbourne, this ethnicity is not prone to bystander intervention.

Demographics
At the 2016 census, Macquarie Park recorded a population of 8,144. Of these:[1]

Age distribution
In keeping with its proximity to the university, Macquarie Park shows an over-representation of younger adults compared to the rest of the country. Macquarie Park residents' median age was 29 years, compared to the national median of 38. Children aged 0–14 years made up just 10.7% of the population (compared to the national average of 18.7%) and people aged 65 years and over made up 8.1% of the population (national average is 15.8%).
Ethnic diversity
31.8% of people were born in Australia. The most common countries of birth were China 14.8%, India 9.4%, South Korea 3.1%, Philippines 2.9% and Hong Kong 2.6%. However, only 10.2% identify their ethnic ancestry as Australian; the other most common self-identified ancestries were Chinese 20.8%, English 12.6%, Indian 9.4% and Irish 4.2%. 35.5% of people only spoke English at home. Other languages spoken at home included Mandarin 15.5%, Cantonese 4.8%, Hindi 4.5%, Korean 3.4% and Indonesian 2.1%.
Religion
This is an optional question on the Census. Of the people who answered it, the most common responses were No Religion 33.8% and Catholic 13.8%.
Income
The median weekly household income was $1,631, higher than the national average of $1,438.
Housing
Most private dwellings (79.6%) were flats, units or apartments. A further 18.8% were semi-detached (townhouses etc.). 58.3% were family households, 31.8% were single person households and 9.8% were group households. The average household size was 2.1 people.

Not only "not prone to bystander intervention" they will push and shove their way to the front so they can watch and then refuse to move when people trying to help need to get through ... Ambos, Police etc.

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court following the violent attack at Macquarie centre when a young boy was bitten on the cheek. He was released on bail despite already being on bail on other serious charges.
