If you live in areas that could be prone to natural disasters you are a fool if you don't have insurance.

IF you rent a house, own a house or have a Mortgage, it is up to YOU to insure your "possessions". If you figure that you can't "afford" to insure what you have .... stiff luck if you find yourself on the street.

I agree. However, it seems that people these days expect "The Government" to help them out for everything. What ever happened to looking after yourself? Live within your means, do NOT try to keep up with the Jones' and so forth if you have to go into debt to do so?

I was reading somewhere that the reason for the high cost of housing is because both husband and wife have to work full time to pay off the mortgage and that has made housing more expensive. Huh?

In my parents day the "left" were the lower class "workers" and union followers. These days the "left" consider themselves the "progressives" ... make everybody share what they have worked hard for, except themselves, of course.

I arrived in Canberra from Sydney in January 1981 with a case of clothes and a 5 year old daughter and $300 in a savings account. I rented a house, using the savings account until I got down to about $20, then I was forced to go to Social Security and ask for assistance. I survived on about $90 a fortnight (while paying $60 for the rent of the fully furnished house) ... I had no other help. As Christmas 1981 approached, I needed money to give my little girl some presents, so I rang about an ad in the Canberra Times who was looking for a Receptionist for $250 a week. I got the job even though I was told I was "over qualified". Meanwhile, I decided that I would save for a deposit on a house, so I was putting $100+ a week in a savings account.

I divorced my husband in March 1982, the Lawyers allowed me to pay the $300+ bill at $25 a month. I got NOTHING financially from my ex-husband, all I wanted was sole custody of my daughter, which I got. Then, saving like mad, I had a deposit for my FIRST HOUSE and I moved in on November 14th 1983. The Lawyers just added the conveyancing fee ($600 I think) to my "account". Eventually, I paid that off in full.

Do NOT tell me what isn't possible. I also took only 10 years to pay off the Mortgage.

This might sound rather insignificant in todays world but believe me, going into a butcher and asking for THREE sausages was a little demeaning since I had come from the Upper North Shore of Sydney with a husband earning a excellent income and travelling overseas. Unfortunately, he couldn't control his temper. So I walked.

I haven't looked back very often.

An emergency warning has been reissued for a massive bushfire in Sydney's south-west, which is rapidly moving in a north-easterly direction towards Sandy Point, Pleasure Point and Voyager Point.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) said residents in those areas should take shelter immediately because it is "too late to leave".

An emergency warning is also in place for Alfords Point and Bardon Ridge.

An ember attack is expected to impact the suburbs of Voyager Point, Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Illawong, Menai, Bangor, and the east of Alfords Point Rd.

The blaze, which has been burning since Saturday, was downgraded from emergency to watch-and-act status overnight, but it has flared up again.
