Winter garden beds and containers

My friend bought me these as a gift when we first moved here... she has them too.
But I didn't put them in until I created the garden, about October.. . Late October.

I'm wondering if they'll work the same without much sun here in the winter.

Are yours multicolored too?

No mine are all white and were great until it rained. I took the tops off and cleaned the ones which went foggy but it hasn't seemed to help.

Guaranteed mine will be stuffed when it snows. We're going to have an unusually cold winter locals advise.


I mean, even colder than last year.

I love the cold anyway, just not sure our garden will appreciate it

Deciduous trees and annuals with a hot house to keep the seedlings during winter so they are ready to plant out in the spring.

That sounds expensive and difficult.

Not sure if I'm prepared to put this much into gardening in a rental property, especially given my fingers will probably freeze to the spade from May to October.


Trees aren't really an option, unless dwarf trees, due to my having a concrete courtyard, most of which is taken up with paddle pool, trampoline, cubby and container garden.

Still contemplating a small sandpit, and hanging baskets.

It's so different to Sydney gardening.

I absolutely love the Southern Highlands and would love to be a gardener down there.

I miss ginger lilies and chillies the most. Lol

And Gardenias. I haven't seen any gardenias around here, and definitely no ginger lilies.

It's gorgeous here admittedly, I love the Edwardian, Victorian, and gothic architecture. Pretty city, but just have to learn how to garden all over again.

We were pretty spoilt in Sydney.

Flowers beds even in the middle of winter, if in correct sunny sheltered spot was achievable.

Even for chocco murderers like me.

Bergonias, succulents, camelias and roses and bulbs seems to be the central highlands favourite around here. And lot's of lavender and rosemary.

Re -chocco.... where there's life there's hope. Even if its only got a few green leaves on it. Just planted in a bad spot. Thinking I might even move it.

The very best way to see what thrives in your area is to check out the neighbours' properties and copy what you like (and what thrive) from them.
