Is it time to #delete facebook?
Brian Acton, the cofounder of the messaging company Facebook paid $US19 billion to acquire four years ago, tweeted on Tuesday that he believed it was time to stop using Facebook.
“It is time. #deletefacebook”, Acton said in a short tweet, without elaborating.
The comment from a former Facebook insider is a particularly personal blow to the world’s largest social network as it struggles to stem a public relations crisis following the news that it allowed the personal data of 50 million users to be exploited by Cambridge Analytica, a data-analytics firm with ties to the Trump campaign.
Facebook acquired WhatsApp, the messaging app that Acton cofounded, in February 2014 for $US19 billion – the largest deal in Facebook’s history. Acton left Facebook in September of 2017 to start his own non-profit company.
It’s not clear if Acton is advising others to delete Facebook or simply declaring that he plans to do so himself. Acton did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment about his tweet.

I have never had a Facebook account in my REAL name. I have never had any intention of using FB but sometimes you need an account to "read" stuff. Ditto LinkedIn.

I have a Facebook account but with real friends. I constantly get 'friend' requests which I DENY because I don't know them. Some people just add anyone who asks and the more the merrier. Mainly the young and silly girls though.
Anything and everything on the net is only as safe as you, yourself, make it.
WhatsApp is great and I use that too. Mainly when my kids are overseas and we can talk/text for free and without paying ridiculous rates for global roaming.
I have never had a problem with Facebook or WhatsApp.

I had Whats App recommended to me by A Singapore friend. Then I read somewhere that there was a security glitch with that, so I deleted/uninstalled it.
I don't want people to know where I am 24/7 and I don't need to know where they are either.

It has nothing to do with people knowing where you are lol. Does everyone who has ever called your mobile know where you are 24/7? Same thing.Neferti~ wrote:I had Whats App recommended to me by A Singapore friend. Then I read somewhere that there was a security glitch with that, so I deleted/uninstalled it.

I have used it for years and never had a problem. God, it's not some sort of covert tracking device!!

I have no idea about WhatsApp. It screwed up some other program or something. I got rid of it. I get maybe one text a week on my mobile phone, if that and never use the mobile phone to ring anyone for a chat.Black Orchid wrote:It has nothing to do with people knowing where you are lol. As I told my daughter this morning, only have friends on Facebook you'd feel comfortable taking care of your child/pet.
My Facebook friends are family and ultra-close friends who I grew up with.
That's it.
Why pander to social media, voyeurs, and bored annoying nobody's?
If it craps itself tomorrow, we'd just go back to sms and phone calls lol. No loss
Lol

I basically use FB for news feeds and groups that im in..
like Beekeeping ...
and Gardening...
aaaand... one or two political parties...
they feed in and you only get the news you want or want to keep an eye on...
it saves you from having to brows the entire Google to keep up to date..
and basically everything is set on private...
if I want o get in touch with family I''ll call them, txt them.. invite them over for lunch.. and actually talk to them face to face..

I see my family face to face too or use text/phone if I need them but I have friends who have long ago moved out of Sydney and, even though we talk on the phone, I rarely see them. A couple post pics of what they are doing or where they are or their kids post pics and I like seeing the pics. Sometimes we reflect on the past and post pics of 'the old days' together. Some live overseas and it's nice to see the pics.
Mine is set to private but if I lost FB tomorrow I couldn't care less. It has its uses though and you just have to ensure your own privacy.
Those who don't ensure their own privacy have nothing to bleat about.
