https://thewest.com.au/politics/federal ... b88778272zA senior member of the Greens in WA has called for Federal leader Richard Di Natale to resign, accusing him of showing a lack of respect for the party’s grassroots structure and members.
But South Australian Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has defended the party’s leader, telling The West Australian’sThe Whip federal politicspodcast that Senator Di Natale had full support and the remarks were not representative of the views of the “bulk of Greens members”.
Senator Di Natale had promised to expel members of his party after the disastrous Batman by-election campaign that saw internal forces “sabotage” candidate Alex Bhathal’s hopes of winning the seat off Labor.
Amid recriminations within the party about the poor result, former WA Greens convenor Grahame Bowland used a Facebook post to criticise the “cultural shift” that had occurred within the party since Senator Di Natale became leader.
“I was alarmed when he immediately, without consultation with the rank-and-file of the party, shifted party messaging to an explicitly centrist mode,” Mr Bowland said.
“Richard has shown a consistent lack of respect for our grassroots structure, and has consistently used his popular perception as our ‘leader’ to intervene in State parties.”
Speaking to The Whip, Senator Hanson-Young praised Senator Di Natale for tackling the undermining of Ms Bhathal and called for him to now “step up” and provide strong leadership.
“We need to let him get on and lead, confront these issues in Victoria head-on,” Senator Hanson-Young said. “They were damaging to the party. They need to be dealt with and we need to back him to do that.”
She also criticised Labor for promising $250 million in “special deals” to Catholic schools during the by-election, saying the Opposition should be “appalled and ashamed of themselves” for doing so when schools were now being funded on a needs basis.
“I am very angry on behalf of taxpayers and on behalf of Australian parents,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

Re: Greens in turmoil
I thought being a GP, Di Nutella may have been a rational voice within the Greens. But oh no, he's totally fucked.
Richard Di Natale has been slammed for ‘politicising’ the bushfire tragedies
EMBATTLED Greens leader Richard Di Natale is copping criticism over a comment he made about recent disasters in Tathra, Darwin and Victoria.
RICHARD Di Natale has been slammed for “politicising” the bushfire and cyclone tragedies over the weekend.
Speaking in the Senate yesterday, the Greens leader said “Australians are bearing the brunt of (the government’s) failure” to transition to renewable energy.
“In the last few days we’ve seen bushfires savage Tathra, Bega and southwest Victoria. We’ve seen a cyclone hit Darwin ... We are seeing climate change in our everyday lives have an impact on the risk of bushfires to our communities.”
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull slammed Mr Di Natale’s comments during a visit to Bega.
“This is not the time to politicise a disaster like this,” Mr Turnbull said, according to The Australian. “You can’t attribute any particular event, whether it’s a flood or fire or a drought or a storm, to climate change.”
Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg accused the leader of being insensitive.
“This is the latest example of the Greens engaging in an insensitive, ideological rant designed to detract from their own internal problems,” he said.
“No wonder the majority of Australians are turned off by the Greens and their tactics.”
Likewise, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Greens leader’s comments exposed “his complete lack of empathy and common sense, let alone his understanding of regional Australia or the environment”.
“Shame on the Greens for using tragedy and disaster to push their agenda — how typical and bloody-minded,” Mr McCormack said.

It comes as the Greens leader is facing calls to resign after his party suffered a shock loss in the Batman by-election over the weekend.
The party faced internal leaks against six-time Batman candidate Alex Bhathal, including the release of a 101-page dossier of complaints against the favoured candidate by almost 20 branch members.
“Those people who are found to be responsible for leaking and undermining our candidate need to be expelled,” Greens leader Richard Di Natale told ABC radio yesterday.
Oh what a mess!!
All on the back of failing to declare his family farm which breaches parliamentary rules. Then ...
Shame Dicky shame!!And Senator Di Natale has paid three au pairs to help with his family as little as $150 a week after tax, or $3.75 an hour - based on a standard 40-hour week - as well as room and board worth $300 a week.

He is a disaster along with Hanson Dumb and Rhiannon. They need to have a clean sweep and go back to their roots if they want to survive.

No there isn't and that's more than sad. I used to have respect for the Greens but now I think they should all be lined up and shot.

If the Doc is the sanest person in the Greens, what does that say about the rest?

I agree with Nef too. There is something creepy/sleazy looking about him and to show I am not biased I think the same about Christopher Pyne.

Re: Greens in Turmoil
The Greens seem, to me, to always be in turmoil, and to swap from 'side' to 'side', whichever gives the most political expediency.
That word 'respect' is way over-used these days.... should go back to Detroit and Gangland...
