..................On March 18, almost 111 million Russian citizens will choose the country's president for the next six years. Sputnik is keeping its eagle eyes trained on the process.

Russian nationals are electing the country's head of the state among eight contenders:

Sergey Baburin from the All-People's Union party; Communist Party candidate Pavel Grudinin; incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin; Civil Initiative party candidate Ksenia Sobchak; Communists of Russia party chairman Maxim Suraykin; Presidential Commissioner for Entrepreneurs’ Rights Boris Titov; co-founder of the Yabloko party Grigory Yavlinsky, and head of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

The polling stations will work since 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in every Russian region in accordance with the time zones. The number of eligible voters in Russia equals 108.9 million people as of January 1, 2018, while abroad the number exceeds 1.87 million people.............

The first politician in years to challenge the Kremlin's grip on power, Alexei Navalny, is barred from the race because of a corruption conviction he says was fabricated by the Kremlin.

He is calling for a boycott of the election, saying it is an undemocratic farce, and deploying supporters to collect evidence of anyone rigging the ballot to inflate turnout and support for Putin. The Kremlin and election officials say any fraud will be stamped out.

......................Voters' Turnout in Eastern Regions Tops 30% by Noon
The turnout in the presidential election in the most eastern regions of Russia was 30.37 percent by noon local time, according to preliminary information on the Central Election Commission website.

By noon local time, Kamchatka Territory had a 31-percent turnout (3 a.m. Moscow time, midnight GMT).

In Magadan Region, 27.7 percent of voters cast their ballots by noon (4 a.m. Moscow time, 01.00 GMT).

Chukotka boasted a 47.3-percent turnout by noon (3 a.m. Moscow time, midnight GMT) and Sakhalin had a 29-percent turnout (4 a.m. Moscow time, 01.00 GMT.....................

Kremlin officials privately acknowledge a worry that some of Russia's 110 million eligible voters will not bother casting ballots because they believe Putin is a shoo-in. A low turnout would diminish his authority in his next term, which, under the constitution, has to be his last.

.................. Nicaraguan Observer Praises Russian Election Technologies for Quick Calculation of Results
"The technology used during the voting process is impressive and will allow to know the results in relatively short time. Many people are voting, but as far as we know the results will be known only a few hours later because of the technology," Francisco Talavera, an observer from Nicaragua, told Sputnik on Sunday.
