Putin approved the Wagner Group's badly thought out attack on a very small contingent of US and Kurdish forces in Syria, on their agreed no-go-zone side of the Euphrates, and got pounded for their effort. Hundreds killed. Stupid move. Even though Putin denies involvement, the Wagner Group operates as an auxiliary of the Russian military. It exists to give Putin barely credible deniability but he gives the orders.

Putin and his mate Assad are also killing thousands of civilians in Syria using biochemicals.

The chemical attack in the UK was probably him letting off steam, and pure revenge, because he got trounced for his stupidity.
