Re: Latest on Citizenship Crisis
Rupert Murdock took up US citizenship and renounced his Australian citizenship to qualify as an owner of a US media company.
If the yanks have changed their rules it's news to me.
I don't care if it seems parochial to oppose it, nor what benefits can be gained from having it.
I reckon Howard fucked up and duel citizenship should be binned.

If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

FEDERAL MPs will be forced to disclose their spouse’s citizenship status, along with their parents and grandparents, in a directive that could see more politicians caught up in the ongoing citizenship fiasco.
The deadline for disclosure has also been moved back to 9am on Tuesday, rather than 8pm, in a bid to deal with outstanding citizenship issues as soon as possible.
MPs could be fined or face jail time if they make false disclosures on the register.
Parliament unanimously voted to implement the register this morning.
Government Minister Christopher Pyne said this morning it looked like at least three MPs will be referred to the High Court by the end of the week.
Labor MPs Susan Lamb and Justine Keay had a “serious cloud” over their status, he told ABC radio this morning.
There are also questions over Labor’s Josh Wilson and Glenn Sterle.
It comes after ousted dual citizen Barnaby Joyce was re-elected in a landslide at the New England by-election on Saturday.
Mr Joyce will be sworn in again this week.
Senators were forced to disclose their citizenship status in a separate register update last Friday. The results will go public at midday today.
“We settled on nine o’clock on Tuesday morning because we made a fair assumption that by now most people would have checked out their citizenship and the steps they may have taken to renounce the citizenship of another country by now,” Mr Pyne told the House this morning.
“And we want to give the Speaker and the clerks ample time to be able to get the information up onto the internet to enable people who are interested to examine the evidence is presented by members and then to give us ample time in the House of Representatives this week to refer any members to the High Court if that is in fact necessary.
“In the case of at least three members, the government believes it will be necessary.”

I don't know what they hope to achieve there. Most MP's grandparents are probably dead and what does it matter what their citizenship status is or was?FEDERAL MPs will be forced to disclose their spouse’s citizenship status, along with their parents and grandparents, in a directive that could see more politicians caught up in the ongoing citizenship fiasco.

I gather that if even one of your Grandparents was born overseas, you can still be eligible to be a dual citizen of that country, via your parents eligibility. Doesn't matter that the Grandparent is dead or that both your parents were born in Australia.Black Orchid wrote:I don't know what they hope to achieve there. I could be wrong, but isn't this dual citizenship thing fairly recent?
Here you go:
The rest of it is here:2002 : From 4 April 2002, Australians becoming citizens of other countries by a voluntary act no longer lose Australian citizenship.
2007 : On 1 July 2007, the Australian Citizenship Act 2007 replaced the 1948 Act. Many Australians who had lost citizenship under the 1948 Act, and their children, are given access to Australian citizenship. The residence period for naturalisation was increased from 2 years to 4 years,[10] with a 3-year transition period for existing permanent residents, and a citizenship test was introduced.

Re: Latest on Citizenship Crisis
At the time I was thinking of the UK and NZ dual citizens but that is a thing of the past now and I fully realise that we do need to tighten things up, stitch them up tight, due to the strong migrant influx we have been accepting from non western countries.
Just look to Fiji where Fijians are now the minority.

Re: Latest on Citizenship Crisis
Regardless!
You would expect that ANYBODY applying to be a Politician would at least READ the instructions.
Do these idiots, applying to be a Politician, also sign on the dotted line (to buy anything) without reading the "fine print"? I doubt it. They think they are above it.
My view of politicians hasn't changed. They are scum of the earth. We can be so lucky that some former lawyers have disgraced themselves and although trying hard, got absolutely fucking no where.
