the constitution should be mended thats for sure... but that cant be done over night so we are stuck with this fiasco..

Sure it is but didn't they check that out BEFORE they nominated and signed on the dotted line that they were Eligible? What's the saying ... "ignorance is not an excuse"?

Well technically yes but if you were born here, lived all your life here and have never even visited the country that one of your parents were apparently born it would it be at the forefront of your thought processes that you might be dual?

Surely most people know where their parents were born? Grandparents? Not so much so. All mine, both sides, came to Australia in 1852.

Perhaps the Form/Handbook needs updating to explain "in detail" what it means to be "potentially" a dual citizen, purely because one of your parents was born overseas.

Anyone who was born in Australia would automatically think that they were PURE Aussies. However, that does NOT excuse those Pollies who signed something, stating that they were NOT dual citizens ... when they were. How can we trust that lot when they don't even know their background and cared less?

My biggest problems with inherited citizenship are situations where it has been automatically conferred back through several generations.

My opinion only......If mother, father and candidate were born in Australia, candidate should be eligible.

If either parent or candidate were born overseas and are now Australian citizens, candidate should be eligible.

We cannot control the automatic conferring of citizenship laws of other countries on candidates, but influence of the generational history surely must be changed to reflect 21st century Australia.

I agree Alinta.

My maternal grandfather was Scottish which made my mother eligible for dual citizenship, which she never took up, but that was our understanding of it that she had to take it up herself.
