Drinking Champagne a Few Times a Week Could Help Prevent Dementia and Alzheimer's
Bubbly just got better...
In news that both offers hope and baffles, scientists have found that drinking three glasses of champagne every week can help to prevent the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's.
A compound found in pinot noir and pinot meunier, the black grapes used to make a bottle of the fizzy stuff, can ward off brain diseases and increase spatial memory.
Professor Jeremy Spencer - one of the academics who carried out the experiment involving rats at Reading University – told the Mail on Sunday "the results were dramatic".
He continued: "This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory."
Those who conducted the study now hope to move on to trials involving pensioners. Meanwhile a spokesman for the Alzheimer's Society described the results as "interesting", but added: "A lot more research is needed."
We await more news with glass in hand...

Moderate alcohol intake may lower the risk of memory problems because it may have anti inflammatory effects on the brain. The main problem with this being that they could forget how much they have consumed and moreso, unfortunately, most of those suffering with Alzheimers are in care facilities where alcohol is not allowed. Such a shame as a glass of wine or similar a few days a week for patients/residents would be a good thing and probably help them to sleep as well?
Alzheimers is a shocking thing and it is horrible to watch. Why shouldn't people in care be able to have small amounts of alcohol now that I think of it?
