I've been "shooting" with my Father .... rabbits ... when I was a kid.
I have never seen a hand gun less alone held one.
Farmers have guns but City folk don't need one. The only people in Australia who have guns are the criminals.

It is better to own a gun and never use it compared to NEEDING a gun and not have one.

Why on earth would I want to, or need to, own a gun?

I could buy a hand gun, if I wanted to, but I would have to belong a Gun Club and be interested in target shooting as a competitive sport, which I am not.

Gun laws are a state-based issue, so each of the scenarios that control the pistol shooting sports may vary slightly, but in essence the following may be taken as the general rule across our nation.

The lawful ownership and use of handguns for approved purposes has a long history of being well regulated in Australia. Penalties for the illegal ownership and use of illegal handguns are also well codified. These penalties are only a deterrent to the illegal use of illegal/legal firearms and they have no effect upon a person who is willing to disregard them and accept the consequences of that decision.

Fact: it is illegal to own, use and possess a handgun in Australia without a licence to do so and has been the case long before John Howard and his National Firearms Agreement of 1996. It is now and always has been, illegal to kill, injure, frighten or annoy another person with a handgun, whether it is registered or not. The police can arrest and place before the courts anyone who commits an offence in relation to the use of firearms and the court may caution, fine or jail any offender.

Unless you are into wild pig shooting, like Yogi, there's not much "game" around to shoot and/or eat .... kangaroos, crocodiles, rabbits and snakes are off the Menu. Who in their right mind would want to shoot a Koala? There are wild deer and goats (introduced species) that you can get a Licence to hunt for. In fact, my SIL and his mate go Deer Hunting regularly in National Forest areas (with a Licence) and use Bows. Thus far, I think they have only ever given a rabbit or two a fright .... no Venison for them ... however they wear the right outfit, stay the weekend away from family and have a great time. Actually, certain people might feel like getting a gun to eliminate FERAL CATS (unLicenced, of course), they are fair game but inedible (the cats).

Besides, in Australia, we do NOT feel the necessity to have a hand gun under our pillow and a baseball bat beside the front door. We sleep easy ... especially here in Canberra where I live. Perhaps 2 murders a year, "domestics" ...

Well it is getting to the stage you may need something if you live in Sydney for protection. All these imported criminals have them and spray each other with bullets almost nightly.

My youngest had a gun pulled on him not that long ago but did not tell me for weeks. Not that I could have done anything, but it is a worry.

Now that Sydney is FULL these thugs will have no alternative other than to spread to a town near you.

If you had Bears, Coyotes and Mountain Lions in your backyard you would probably have a gun too. We don't have those but most farmers here are armed for a reason.
