LABOR leader Bill Shorten will move to legalise same-sex marriage in his first 100 days if he becomes prime minister.

Mr Shorten made the pledge after securing a compromise that federal Labor MPs would be bound to vote in favour of marriage equality, but not for another two elections.

Labor has tried to put a potentially damaging internal rift over the issue behind it by challenging Prime Minister Tony Abbott to allow his members a free vote on the issue.

Mr Shorten said same-sex couples had waited too long for marriage equality.

“Australia is trailing the world,” he said.

There are less than 50000 homosexual couples in the whole of Australia, yet the noise from this issue is far louder than what it should be.

Most Homosexuals in fact the vast majority do not want marriage nor do they want a "committed" relationship or a family.

To be honest I care less about this.
Every poll I see suggests the majority are in favour. The bottom line is if the government don't give a conscious vote Labor will just legalise it when they get elected. The Liberal party have wedged themselves on this and Labor love it. The only reason it's an issue is because the right of the Liberal party are digging in their heels on a conscious vote.
Most other western countries have now legalised it, we are hardly trend setters. Even Ireland have legalised it.
If gays want to marry,let them, if they don't want to they don't have to. What's the big deal if they marry or not? People's religious beliefs should have nothing to do with laws of the land. According to the last census there are more of my mob, non believers, than there are Catholics, the next biggest group.
In some ways I think it's unfair on heterosexual couples if it's not recognised.if two gay males are living together and one is unemployed they can claim benefits or even a pension where as a heterosexual couple can not.
This will end in tears for the government, and for what? Because Labor will legalise it as soon as they win government.
