It's not governments job to subsidise private enterprise. If private schools (or hospitals) can't make it on their own, they shouldn't be there. Many other countries have private schools and hospitals without govt. funding and they survive, in fact, they thrive. Govt's job is to provide a standard education for everyone. If that's not good enough for you, then its up to you to pay for it. Why should everyone esle pay for you?

They do pay fees and state that their kids are at a "private school", but the fees they pay are hardly much more than parents who send their kids to a "state" School pay out of their pocket. School is NOT FREE!

Independent schools ... the Grammar Schools ... charge up to $30,000+ pa

IF you read the link you would see that The Government (Coalition or GALP) have "rules" about which schools get what. Catholic schools are obviously are the poorest, since they cater for people who want their children to have a Religious education and want to tell all that their kids go to a "Private School". Catholic schools are mostly funded by The Government.

Real "Private/Independent Schools" charge parents a mint but they are very popular and do NOT attract as much "government funding" as the Catholic Schools ... for very obvious reasons.

So, as I said. Blame the Catholics. They consider themselves above the "state schools".
