The main article also talks about a $35/month net/phone charge at 25mbs so the very poorest can now have internet. 25mbs is the fastest you can get with wireless broadband running at "super speed" when conditions are just right! A bargain basement NBN connection STARTS at that speed!!!

Beyond that, our local school has interactive whiteboards that can be used to implement virtual classrooms, amongst other things. Except that they can’t, because we’re rural, and Telstra, despite having put ADSL2 in our local exchange, won’t turn it on because of their tantrum-ridden negotiations with the ACCC.

The thing about the universality promised with the NBN is that it enables cool things like virtual classes for specialist subjects, and collaboration with kids from different backgrounds. If not everyone has the technology, that sort of stuff just can’t make it into a curriculum.

The whiteboards are part of the digital education revolution. The privatisation of Telstra was a disaster, mismanaged in every way by the Fibs with the timid acquiescence of the Nats. A bold policy like the NBN and the structural separation of Telstra should fix that shambles.

I'll kick it off with reflections of some comments in the major papers today.

Well it's plain to see the Labor Hacks are out today. For starters you can bet Abbott isn't the policy's author. Turnbull is. Turnbull has the experience and as Abbott said he isn't a Tech head. So you can all lay off blaming Abbott for Turnbull's "Labor apparent" discomfort.

You can stop comparing 25 to 100 because one is a minimum and one is a maximum. let's not be dishonest about that. You can stop saying the Libs have blown the election based on this one policy. Maybe for Computer Gamers they have, but the rest of us are I assume sane.

As for speeds and capacity, honestly how much do you want, more importantly how much do you need. The difference for most households will be between a blink and a blink and a half.

The NBN is very expensive. Labor would have a huge surplus without it.

It may well be a "white elephant" and it could also be technologically obsolete if not upon completion, within a decade.

How much will maintenance cost? How often will it be necessary? I heard that in some places already 70% of cable joins have had to be redone. How will this affect our regular communications? I suggest you google that one. (well those that can)

Apparently the NBN went "live" in Gunghalin, ACT, the other day and one of the uses posted this on the RiotAct.

Please note the pictures of the equipment installed (unbelievable!) and speed test compared to what he used to get from Bigpond. I don't think he has mentioned how much it has/will cost him, yet.
