A gunman who fatally shot a senior constable in Queensland's Lockyer Valley had "a grievance against police" and was firing a high-powered gun at specialist officers when he was killed in a shootout, senior police say.

Rick Maddison, 40, was declared dead on Tuesday morning after the gunfight with SERT officers, following an overnight siege in a farmhouse at Adare, near Gatton.

On Monday, Maddison killed Senior Constable Brett Forte when police tried to stop the fugitive's car on a road at Seventeen Mile in the Lockyer Valley.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the bomb squad remained at the scene.

He said Maddison had a violent criminal past, but declined to provide further details about the man's history with police.

"This is a person who was highly motivated and had a grievance against police," he said.

"We know that he had issues."

The Policeman who lost his life was a young man with a wife and kids. How sad.

I remember that my daughter at about 14 said she wanted to be a Police Officer. I've no idea where that came from. Anyway, one night we were watching The Bill on the ABC and she asked "do policewomen have to wear those shoes?" That decided her there and then. She went on to do a Degree in Business Management. I think that she would rather be a Horticulturalist, like my Mother was .......

I read the phrase "suicide by cop" often now. Am guessing the practice always has existed but there was never a word for it ... I can't imagine it is a new phenomenon ...

but wouldnt tear gas bring it to an end this went on for hours......and we are lucky no one else was killed apart from him...

I can see why they wouldnt use it in the Lindt Cafe.....but they had a lot more information on this guy....
