I read this on the bus this morning, in a book called 'The best American Science writing 2009'

When a male giraffe is interested in a female, he apparently follows her about and nuzzles her, er, nether regions.

Noticing his interest, the female giraffe urinates.

Male giraffe catches the urine on his lips/mouth etc, and does some sort of sniffing ritual as he has a sensory organ (Jacobsen's organ) that can detect from the lady's urine if she is fertile or not.

Sure beats dinner and flowers.
