The problem with some people is that, IF they get "retrenched" (nobody gets the sack these days) they immediately go to Centrelink, looking for a hand out. Nope.... if you get retrenched/made redundant you cant sign up straight away, if you get redundancy you can look forward to trying to hold on for 12 more months without any money coming in. If you are living pay-day-to-pay-day you have over extended yourself. Cut down on costs or not get into "credit" in the first instance. Yes, get used to living below the poverty line and begging for charity.

Centrelink doesn't have JOBS True... who said they did? You are expected to be assigned to an NGO who do nothing to help you for the first 12 months except to make sure you are fulfilling your responsibilities of looking for work and applying for the right amount of jobs a fortnight. ... you need to check online or the local newspaper and apply for any job you can ... keep applying until you crack it. And keep applying and keep applying and get no feedback or even the courtesy to tell you you didn't get the job etc... 770,000 UNEMPLOYED vs 150,000 jobs in Australia remember... that's 620,000 people who are entitled to be on the NEWSTART Poverty Allowance.

Life was never meant to be easy, as I well know. Just you eh... I arrived in Canberra in January 1981 with $300 in a savings account and a 5 year old daughter. After settling in, I found a job and started saving for a deposit on a house. I am still in the house I bought in 1983 and had it paid off by 1996*. It was NOT easy and I remember going to the Butcher and asking for 3 sausages (1 for her and 2 for me). I haven't had sausages and mash since those days. We survived. NOBODY gave me a break, I went out and found one all by myself! Lucky you 620,000 Australians do not have a job to be lucky enough to get because one doesn't exist.... let me know when you get it and I can stop repeating myself.

* I did NOT get any money (furniture or otherwise) from my ex husband. He did pay $140 a month in child support until she was 16. He should have paid until she finished Uni but I didn't quibble about it. Shit happens. Don't get divorced and don't get pregnant... your choice... meanwhile there are 620,000 Australians male and female with and without families that do not have a job to even apply for and 1,000,000 underemployed just keeping their heads above water.
