Voluntary levy put to Centrex
21 Oct/2009
The Port Lincoln Council has outlined plans to ask Centrex Metals to pay a voluntary levy to ship iron ore through the city ...
Earlier this month, Centrex was granted approval to export iron ore through Port Lincoln.
The council remains opposed to the plan and will ask the company to consider paying a voluntary levy of not less than $1 per tonne of ore shipped through the city.
Mayor Peter Davis says it would cover issues that will certainly arise. "There will be iron ore dust, there will be noise issues, there will be traffic issues, there may well be wharf issues," he said.
Mr Davis says it is unlikely Centrex will agree to the plan because it is not part of the licence conditions.
The company is expected to respond to the idea today ...

If you have ever been to Whyalla you would know why Pt Lincoln don't want an iron ore dock!

So like Gladstone is Whyalla. Same big industrial plants - same lack of scenery
For a native of Frisco, you sure take a lot of interest in Australian issues Annie

Moved to sunnier climes eh?
Are you doing a research papaer on political attitudes in Australia? Or just having fun? I like boards like this - you can just say what you think instead of having to sugar coat it like you do on other forums.
BTW, I was briefly a poster on a US political blog. Hey JM, guess who I found there? Elroy!

Lefteee ...
No, not doing any research paper,
I happen to have aussie friends and I've always admired Australia, and it's for fun ...
I can post aussie news easily enough, but I don't really understand the issues,
so cannot really discuss the ones I'm posting here ...
This is a fun board, I like it!

Yeah I should explain a bit better.
Pt Lincoln is mainly a fishing port--tuna above all!
If iron ore is going to be loaded onto ships there you will get shitloads of red dust which the people living in Pt Lincoln don't want, believe it or not! Hence the levy to wash away the dust/prevent the dust etc.

Okay Jm, yes I see there would be issues with iron ore dust.
Is the iron ore what makes the dirt so red in some areas of Australia?

Don't think so, have not seen any references our soils are high in iron--being such an old continent tho our soils are old abd deficient in phosphorus.
