I got a mortgage in 1983 .... I had it paid off by 1996, thanks to a couple of "windfalls". It wasn't easy but just as well as in my retirement I am "rent free", otherwise I wonder how I would cope.

You certainly wouldn't make any money renting out your sporting goods.

You should do a google search on property taxes in the USA. Atlanta is about 1% but other states are higher. On a $ 600,000 house, one would be paying about $ 6000 a year plus about $ 2000 in water and sewage charges plus extra for other charges.

Flood and storm insurance and car insurance is very expensive.

New Jersey has the highest effective rate at 2.38% and is followed closely by Illinois (2.32%), New Hampshire (2.15%), and Connecticut (1.98%). On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii has the lowest effective rate at 0.28%, and is followed closely by Alabama (0.43%), Louisiana (0.51%), and Delaware (0.55%). How does your state compare?
