How quickly we forget. At the lead up to the 2007 election, both Liberal and Labor promised an NBN. Rudd based his on a fibre backbone with eventual fibre to the premises. Howard promised to hang cables between telephone poles, using whatever copper was available, use exiting pay TV coax and anything else he could. By far the best solution at the time was the Fibre one. Rudd won government and within the year, a test rollout of the NBN was started in Armidale NSW and small suburbs around major cities in Australia. There is already a number of fibre backbones that interconnect major cities in Australia so it was more laying down the networks to connect the consumer to the backbone. This was the main job of the NBN. The initial test were highly successful, so the rollout commenced in planned stages.

At this time, the Coalition spokesman on Communications was "Mr Internet" himself, Malcolm Turnbull. He was highly critical of the NBN - but when questioned on hundreds of interviews over his time in the portfolio COULD NOT KNOCK THE TECHNOLOGY - he could only knock the cost. Of course our NBN is now a disaster under the Coalition. Fibre to a dirty big green cabinet in your street then ancient copper to your home, Well done Coalition

Now, to address the OP. It doesn't matter what the speed of the wireless network is. It doesn't matter if you have a gigabyte ethernet network running in your business or home because eventually and usually within milliseconds your data speed will slow down to the speed allowed by the transfer medium. So, if you are getting gigabyte speeds into the house, then only megabyte speeds across the copper to the NBN point it doesn't matte what wireless transmits at, your data has already been slowed down. Under TCP/IP protocol data is only transmitted when an acknowledgement has been received that the preceding data has been received. Whilst full duplex transmission allows data to be sent and acknowledgement received at the same time - data will still only travel when it is allowed to, so any technology roadblock eg copper, data protocol changing media, routing and switching will cause delay. ON the full fibre NBN all these blocks would be virtually gone
