What a dreadful and sad topic...yet everything posted reflects my sentiments entirely.

lisa the more its talked about the more people m ay take heed..
for all we know it may save a life of a member here...
we do not know if they have pools or young children aroun d or too visit..
a lot of people dont bother with the news...this is happening far too often its a disgrace.
can we at least have alarms on these fences.. something that need switching off by an adult too far out of reach for babies.

I think it happens when people don't close the gates properly and you can never trust that everyone will either do the right thing or be diligent. I don't think there is any fix for that.

Alarms on gates? Sounds like a great idea to me.cods wrote:lisa the more its talked about the more people m ay take heed..

I was thinking along the lines of a 4 number code on gates. Also, all pool gates need to be able to swing shut behind you...ie only stay open if held open by a hand at adult height.
Re little children being forgotten/left behind in cars by their own parents/caregivers???? Hmmmm....still thinking about that one. I used to think being a responsible child focused parent/caregiver was the answer. Oh wait....

Re: WHEN will we EVER LEARN?
we have some terrible parenting out there I fear....its as if we have stopped thinking for ourselves...
how do you forget leaving a child in a car for gods sakes...
what I mean is you dont leave them there in the first place...
it should be an automatic fine... like drink driving ..

I don't think the problem is that toddlers can actually reach up and unlock the gates. The problem is usually when someone leaves the pool that they don't shut the gate correctly and don't check it. They need to have strong springs like fire doors.

Re: WHEN will we EVER LEARN?
gates can be shaken open though BO I have actually seen it done...
the council says yes you can have a pool if you do this this and this.. but its never policed is it...
a baby drowned in Canberra and I saw the fence and it was non existent... and I was told it had been like it forever..
its a terrible shame but honestly If we have to BLAME someone its lands at the parents feet...its the same with the road..do you let them wander out in the street without care????...I dont know what they are thinking.

THIS IS WHAT I MEAN ABOUT 'BAD PARENTS'
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/n ... a86c512052
RECKLESS parents are dumping their children at the beach or deserting them in shopping centres during the school holidays so they can enjoy a coffee at a trendy cafe or get their nails done.
Lifeguards have complained of deserted kids being left “wandering” the beach.
And retailer Pet’s Paradise at Burwood Westfield has even resorted to putting up a sign to warn parents not to leave their offspring unattended.
“Our staff aren’t babysitters,” a spokesman yesterday told The Daily Telegraph.
It has also emerged children aged just two have been left unattended for up to an hour at the Pets R Fun store at Westfield Eastgardens so mums can get their nails done.
“It happens on a daily basis. There is a glass wall between us and the beauty shop and the mums think it’s OK, but it’s not safe,” the store’s proprietor Peta said.
unbelievable...

The baby bonus exacerbated this problem. Too many children were created by irresponsible people just for the cash. It was obvious back when it was introduced that we didn't have the infrastructure in place to cope with the ramification of mass produced children.

not forgetting the paid parental leave a lefty idea..
why should we have infrastructure available for people having children???? may as well say every young couple should be entitled to a 5 bedroom house to accommodate the family they may have..
no way...... we have made it so easy for single girls to get pregnant and live very comfortably on welfare ... she could even stay on it until the child was an adult. until recently...
I for one have a granddaughter who already has two children to two different fathers..second relationship up the kyber...shes only 31 so plenty of time for more relationships..and she had both children whilst on welfare..... she thankfully has a job now.....but who knows whats down the track.. and she knows centrelink is her safetynet.. doesnt she?.... and so do they all...
