Maybe parents nowadays are so used to having other people looking after their children (daycare/before/after school care etc) that they don't really know how to look after them adequately themselves.

Sign of the times. Leave it to poor old Somebody Else.Black Orchid wrote:Maybe parents nowadays are so used to having other people looking after their children (daycare/before/after school care etc) that they don't really know how to look after them adequately themselves.
I know that all of you were saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our church's most valuable members -- Someone Else.
Someone's passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years, and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than the normal person's share of the work. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results. Someone Else can work with that group. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's lips, "Let Someone Else do it." It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference.
Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing super-human, but a person can only do so much. Were the truth known, everyone expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone. We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? Remember, we can't depend on Someone Else anymore.

maybe we have done too much for this generation...who in their right mind takes their eyes off a 2 yr old where water is involved???..
you know so many are on these bloody phones.. 24/7.. we never had them thank god...but maybe thats what they are doing they seem to me to be addicted to them..to the point where children and safety are not paramount....they even text driving... we know they do..they wouldnt bring in a law about it if they didnt..

Just heard on the news that 2 million childcare places are required. People lining up to put their 2 year olds in someone else's care. It's ridiculous. If you want to have children at least look after them yourself until school age.
I didn't see one caucasian there either, but I am sure there are some.

EXACTLY. I recall my former husband telling me, when I got pregnant, that I would "have to stay at home" .... and we would have to "live on one income". SO?Black Orchid wrote:Just heard on the news that 2 million childcare places are required. People lining up to put their 2 year olds in someone else's care. It's ridiculous. I presume that these days couples are using BOTH their incomes to get the Bank to lend them the money .... for The House?
That's fine ....
But .....
MALES do NOT earn enough to support a wife and children ... or if they have a wife who earns more .......
Times have changed, dramatically.
I actually think that Sydney, in particular, should stop putting pressure on young couples to GET A MORTGAGE ... there is absolutely nothing wrong with RENTING ... provided you can obtain a long-term lease (like at least 7-10 years) with no increases in the Rental charged.
They should start looking to Europe ... where long term rentals are available and almost NOBODY owns their "residence".
As a Renter you should also be able to do some "renovations" at your own cost ....
I own my own home. So it doesn't bother me but kids need to really stop thinking that they have to save for 10 years (or whatever) to get a MORTGAGE ....
We have to instill in people that RENTING is not a bad thing .... but something that could become "normal".

you may find this hard to believe...I have a granddaughter [ not by blood] I have had her in my life on and off since she was less than 1 yr old.. she is now 31..she has two... each a different father each with different surname.. .. she now has a very good job after lots of study and so on but for years she was a single parent.... she is again now. [ single] but with a job.. she put both children into child care from about 3 weeks old..because she was on the single parent income $5 a WEEK it cost her ... full time...she did sort of work casual in aged care..but it wasnt regular and from what I saw she didnt need to have her babies in there from 8 to 6pm 5 days a week...
if you count how many single mothers there are and if they are all doing the same thing for $5 a week....you can see the mess we are in for..
her eldest boy who is 6 has problems..and goes to a special class.. the children of course no no different.. but I can see trouble ahead in all sorts of ways...we shunt our kids off and blame everything else for their behaviour...when she picked her son up from day care he was always in with the babies because he was a bully and hard to control in with his own age.... she would blow up the carers but never took him out of the place..of course he can swear with the best of them and is very defiant...I havent seen her for over 6 months.. but I am sure she will pop up when things get tough ..... as they always seem to do.

You are lucky to get a rental contract in Sydney for 12 months, most are 6 months. 7-10 years with no increases? Are you kidding? Pie in the sky that will never happen. If you were a property owner would you sign a rental agreement like that? I certainly would not.
Sydney rentals are in keeping with Sydney house prices. Ridiculously high and absolutely not comparable to Europe. Europeans rent houses instead of purchasing for a simple reason. Rentals are cheap there!Neferti~ wrote:They should start looking to Europe ... where long term rentals are available and almost NOBODY owns their "residence".

It seems to be all the rage now. Wanting to be a parent but not having to actually parent. Drop them off with someone else first thing in the morning and pick them up at night, feed them and put them to bed.cods wrote:Black Orchid wrote:Just heard on the news that 2 million childcare places are required. It's a really sad situation and we shouldn't be financing it.

I agree with you about paid parental leave. I don't endorse it at all.
