So what should we expect next time 'round?

My guess is greater support for the likes of Hanson & Co, Team Xenaphon and the Greens.
The real danger here is the Greens being able to push through their 'Proportional Representation' agenda. Then it'll no longer be Ozzy politics Italian style, it'll be Ozzy politics PNG style - where nothing gets done because nobody can agree on anything.

IMO the best thing the Libs can do is reinstall Tony Abbot.
If Shorten gets in we may as well quit working and all go on the dole.
No matter how hard the Greens try, they still only get about 10% vote.

Also, can ANYONE tell me what the difference is between "preferential voting" and "proportional voting". People state that "preferential voting" should stop as it allows All Sorts to get a seat.

I did a quick Google but I got 2 different explanations ... are they the same thing or not?

Bob Hawke is still pontificating, perhaps your lot should bring him back? Be quick though ... he looks like he is on his last legs.

Maybe, but that's only if Ozzies stick with the status quo, which looks unlikely.
At times Greens have got 20% and in certain seats 25%.
With more people abandoning the major parties and/or casting protest votes the Greens vote could very well increase.

Preferential voting is where when primary votes are exhausted (for a particular candidate) that vote goes to whoever that candidate/party preferenced as their next best option, and continues down the list of candidates until all votes are exhausted. This means a candidate with more primary votes can be beaten by someone with more preference votes, as is often the case. So even though more people voted for a certain candidate, they can lose to someone who a greater number prefer as their 2nd, 3rd or even 10th choice.

Proportional voting is where (with a minimum threshold) gaining only a small fraction of primary votes allows those who voted that way to be represented in govt.
Say hypothetically that a govt had 100 seats, and 5% of the electorate voted for the Moonbat Party, then the Moonbat party gets 5 MPs in that govt.

The Greens in coalition with Labor got it introduced in Tasmania.
NZ has had it for quite some time, forcing the Nationals John Key to appoint MPs from other parties to his cabinet. Which made things awkward and why he was said to be such a good negotiator.
Proportional voting is the system used to elect our Senate - the results speak for themselves, good or bad.
Neferti~ wrote:I did a quick Google but I got 2 different explanations ... are they the same thing or not?
Certainly not.

I don't support either concept. I advocate 1st past the post (only primary votes counted), and is a major part of my excuse for not voting ... as for the compulsory part, they can go copulate themselves.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

sadly it is where the whole world is now..

cant you smell the change coming red??>..ts almost as if we are watching history..

I can feel it and see it.. its in the future of course but its CHANGE its staring us all in the face

it must be how the Industrial Revolution began...with a slow roar..

of course we are scared most HUGE changes have come preceded by major WAR....

and then we have almost been grateful for the CHANGE..

because even though we dont acknowledge it it was always for the betterment of mankind...

Imagine what it must have been like for those who were in the horse selling industry when they saw the first car roll off the assembly line..
it must have sent cold fear through that industry..

we are in for a Brave New World no doubt about that.....

doesnt really matter whos in charge the outcome will always b e. HOPE...

there is almost no difference in any major party in Australia and we should be grateful for that...

far left and far right are so divisive and thats the trouble with our country right now...

everyone at loggerheads...

at this time I dont see labor being any better inf act they would be worse because they think throwing money at it fixes it..

and we dont have any money....

AS the year draws to a close and we’re all working out what we want to change about ourselves in 2017 you’d imagine the people who’d be forming the longest lists would be the world’s politicians.

It’s hard to believe how much has changed in the past 365 days. Pauline Hanson is back and not just as an amusing side note to the political conversation, Britain has given the finger to the EU and perhaps most surprising of all, Donald Trump is about to become President of the United States.

But while times are definitely changing, Australia’s politicians still have a chance to bail the rising water out of the HMAS Establishment before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean and Pauline Hanson puts on a wetsuit to assess the damage.

Hindsight is a powerful thing (if used to your advantage) and while the ripples of Trump and Brexit have begun to be felt here, they’re still just that; ripples. But potentially not for long. If this past year has shown us anything it’s that the public are done with politics as usual.

I see where I am not the only one thinking its time to except CHANGE..

this is interesting...like Pauline or not...she speaks her mind and doesnt say what some people want to hear..

and thats just like me...I speak my mind...no two faces with me..lolol

She has got guts - and energy. After being put in gaol which would have been a nightmare, she didn't give up when others would have. It's true that she doesn't say what some people want to hear, but you have to admire her stamina.

if you really listen to her a lot of what she says .. the others follow with down the track...she has condemned the was we have allowed all sorts to come here..admittedly the 6 years with no borders did us no favours but honestly look at what we have...we are building special jails to incarcerate those we imported for the most part..... we cant afford to have open borders it was on TV earlier about how they are now employing people in aged care who cant speak a word of English.... since when is that ok?..
