WHEN will we EVER LEARN?

A SEARCH and rescue operation was last night called off after emergency services failed to find a teenager spotted struggling off a southern Sydney beach.

The 14-year-old, believed to be from Guildford, reportedly got into difficulties at Maroubra just before 8.30pm, sparking a search involving Police Rescue, the Marine Area Command, the Ambulance Rescue Helicopter and lifesavers.

Police said they were called about 8.30pm after reports two people were in trouble. Officers found a 14-year-old boy unharmed lying on the sand. The search was called off at midnight, with the missing boy yet to be found

what ever is the matter with people today....no matter how many die each and every year.

more and more take the risk...or take their eyes off their babies...

I just do not understand it..

There have been a lot of drownings over this Christmas period - more than the average. At 14 most boys want to be independent and it becomes hard following their every move. They go somewhere with their mates and do things they normally wouldn't do under a parent's supervision. There isn't much a parent can do to prevent the death of a teenager. You can't tie them up. Girls are at risk too. They go to places they haven't told their parents about and sometimes get raped or worse - murdered. If they can survive this period of life relatively unharmed - then you can consider yourself lucky.

of course you cant stop people being stupid...I wish...but the time they choose to got swimming has got to have something to do with it...

I guess with this heat wave the deaths are going to mount....

I do understan d 14 year old boys think they are bullet proof.

Life's a gamble, and risk is the elixir of adventure.

Our waters can be very dangerous and too many people come to Australia and just don't take heed of the warnings nor do they take the necessary precautions.

There weren't any red/yellow flags on the beach at the time.

The disappearance comes as seven people drowned in NSW in 48 hours, prompting warnings from authorities to take care in the water.

I definitely wouldn't be going for a swim in this!

The absence of flags is a warning in itself.

We even had a drowning in Canberra on Christmas Day ... not a swimming pool (or the beach) but this .... looks tame enough, hey?

A water hole to the west of Canberra where a 27-year-old man died on Christmas Day is understood to have claimed about a dozen lives since becoming a popular swimming spot in the 1960s.

The most recent incident has prompted renewed calls from authorities for people to take care in Canberra's waterways.

.
Life is a must. And we must take risks to survive. Its just that no-one has any skills because of NANNY.

The above swimming hole is deceptive. Depending on its orientation, it will have warm and cold spots all over the surface. However, about three feet down, it is likely very very cold everywhere. This will send an unfit and unaware carcass into shock and fits in no time.

There should be signs on these sorts of places to teach people these things.

Same as when flying. The TV in the waiting areas should all play videos about the risks people face in the area they are traveling to, and when going abroad generally. The screen should not just be for advertising
