Dick Smith takes Lucy Turnbull to task

Post by Black Orchid » Thu Dec 15, 2016 6:32 pm

Businessman Dick Smith has attacked Lucy Turnbull’s planning for the future of Sydney, accusing her of failing to address the city’s booming population increase and its link to the nation’s “high immigration rates”.

In a print advertisement campaign unveiled today in News Corp and Fairfax newspapers, Mr Smith takes aim at the Prime Minister’s wife who is the chief commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission, which delivers strategic plans for the city to the NSW government.

Mr Smith has demanded Ms Turnbull “tell us the facts” and reveal her “real plan” to deal with the growing number of people living in Sydney instead of spruiking “perpetual population increase”.

“Lucy, as the chief planner for the City of Sydney, you are talking about a Sydney with a population of 8 million,” the advertisement reads. “What are you real plans after the 8 million?”

“Our growth primarily comes from extremely high immigration rates … Why don’t you ever mention this?”

Mr Smith told The Australian: “She’s intelligent and well educated but she is spruiking this growth idea instead of saying it’s impossible to have continual growth. It’s the same with the major political parties at the moment; they all preach, they talk about growth, but don’t say its perpetual growth. If they said perpetual growth, you’d say, that is suspect, that’s impossible.”

Mr Smith recently supported Pauline Hanson’s immigration policy, which would reduce numbers arriving from 200,000 people a year to 70,000. Mr Smith said he had “no intention of supporting” or donating to One Nation but he would use his public profile to warn the major parties not to be surprised if Ms Hanson continued to win popularity and seats in NSW. “If you walk down the street with me, people will stop me all the time and say, ‘Dick we agree with you about population’. I think its incredibly serious,” he said.

The Australian sought comment from Ms Turnbull, through the Greater Sydney Commission. Commission chief executive Sarah Hill responded that Sydney’s rate of population growth was the “hallmark of all successful cities around the world”, and the group based its planning on a middle range of growth forecast, prepared by the state’s demographers.

“More than half of this growth is through natural increase,” Ms Hill said. “Our responsibility is to plan for this to make our city more liveable, sustainable and productive, rather than to debate the facts.”

Mr Smith has called for a return to “free range kids” who are allowed a “backyard and a place for a cubby house” instead of allowing a situation where “freestanding houses are bulldozed and replaced with termite high rise”.

It is absolutely disgraceful what has been happening in Sydney. Beautiful old, and well built, Federation houses are being demolished in suburbs to make way for the slums of the future.

Lucy Turnbull has no right to dictate her vision for the future of Sydney and there is no going back for Sydney. It has been totally ruined to make way for immigrants.

The sooner both the Turnbulls are gone the better. Who the Hell approved this one?

They look like future ghettos to me ...... who is the Architect ...

Oh, my cleaning girl gave notice yesterday, her hubby has "won" a promotion up in Sydney, starts in January and they went up there last week or so to look for a rental (they will keep their new home here and rent it out). They looked on the North Shore (Hornsby!) and Lane Cove and finally rented a place in Gladesville ... I can't say that I know the area but .... she did say that some areas they looked at, when they wandered around the local shopping centres all they saw were Asians! Gladesville is, apparently, mostly Aussies. His Office is in Sydney Central, so will need to catch the train to work. They have 2 kids a boy age 9 and a girl age 6. Originally from Adelaide.

I am on the Lower North Shore and for every 10 people you see ... 8 are Asians.

No trains in Gladesville so he will have to catch a bus.

That's what I thought. I wonder why she thought there were trains around there?

I used to drive my husband to the Pymble Station, then (when he wasn't o/s) he would ring me when he was about to leave the office in North Sydney so that I could pick him up in the evening. He did NOT make me move into the passenger seat so that he could drive. Admittedly I was a stay at home Mother at the time ...

Saw that article and Dick's add yesterday. Last year he ran a similar themed add with a picture of Avalon beach super-imposed with what looked like tens of thousands of people on the beach and the background and endless row of high rise buildings.

Afraid Dicky's about 20 odd years too late with his campaign. If he'd done this in the early to mid 90s I'd have supported him.
But I saw the writing on the wall, with vast swathes of suburban Sydney over-run with hordes of migrants and/or ethnics, many of which
can't communicate with me and/or are hostile, so I said "Let the wogs have it, and fuck it up, I'm going elsewhere".

In 1999 (and 2002) I went for a short visit back to Sydney and went to see some mates in Sutherland. Their (rented) house no longer existed, all houses along the entire stretch of President Ave between Old Princess Hwy and the Princess Hwy Sutherland bypass were gone, and blocks of units standing in their place. I saw a similar situation around Engadine CBD in the mid 90s. Apparently the place has entirely changed is now massively built up.
On the 2002 visit I went for a drive along King Georges Rd from the Princess Hwy to Hume Hwy and hardly recognised it.
Apparently that's progress.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

These prefab block style unit blocks in various bright colours are going to be the slums of the future and they are pulling down street after street of solidly built character filled houses to make way for them.

Where are they building those blocks? They look like housing commision.
Gladesville is a nice area. My aunt used to live in Henley which is a little place just next to Gladesville, her husband was a builder, working to middle class. I saw a list the other day of the top ten streets in Sydney and her street was on it. Her place did back onto the water.

They are building these block things everywhere. They are some new wave Architect's attempt at trying to make their mark but will only result in them being future slums.

Henley is a lovely place. I almost bought a house there in the 80s for $28,000. I hate to think how much it would be worth now.
