Murdoch using fake news

Post by Redneck » Mon Dec 12, 2016 1:47 pm

Murdoch and its unthinking "echo chamber" in MSM caught in clumsy con trick to conceal the Coalition's disastrous real news with "fake news" about Labor's handling of the GFC. Alan Austin reports.

THE MURDOCH media gleefully reported a so-called “research” paper yesterday, which enabled it to resume its attacks against the Rudd Government’s response to the global financial crisis (GFC).

It began with a “news” story by Simon Benson in The Australian which claimed a ‘damning Treasury-commissioned independent review of the former Labor government’s unprecedented spending response to the global financial crisis’ was to be published.

It was. But not on the Treasury website.

It is found here as one of a

‘... series of papers written by either current Treasury staff or external experts ... The views expressed in this paper are those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of the Australian Treasury.’

Those who have followed the malicious attacks against Labor’s extraordinarily successful response to the GFC will be familiar with the author, Tony Makin. And also with rebuttals of his earlier attacks. That did not stop the media leaping on the “story” with enthusiasm. At last! Something to distract from the spate of shocking news about the deteriorating economy — notably negative GDP growth, the trade deficit blow-out, worsening unemployment and the looming recession.

The story was picked up by the Australian Financial Review, the New Daily and others — most with stress on Labor’s incompetence.

Mining investment website Hot Copper declared:

‘The ALP spending binge during the GFC has wrecked our economy and is the PRIME reason we are in the predicament we are in at the present moment. That is not just my opinion any more. IT IS NOW THE OFFICIAL TREASURY VIEW’.

Good grief!

Stale analysis reheated

Benson claims this is ‘the first economic study of its kind into government fiscal stimulus policy.’

Absolute nonsense. The paper is a rehash of Makin’s 2014 paper, but with one intriguing twist. That tawdry treatise blamed the deficits and debt during Labor’s period on Rudd’s stimulus decisions. This update also blames the rapid deterioration of the economy under the Coalition on Rudd’s 2008 decisions.

Other researchers have produced much better studies, including Tony McDonald and Steve Morling, the IMF, the OECD, and other international agencies.
Makin discredited

Tony Makin is associated with the Liberal Party-aligned Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) and a regular contributor to Murdoch publications. His 2014 paper was debunked (see 'Key Points' below) by then Treasury Secretary Martin Parkinson (now Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet), whose comments serve to do so again.

Parkinson asserts that Makin’s criticisms of the fiscal stimulus are:

‘... based on a theoretical model that does not apply in Australia’s case in general and assumptions that did not hold during the global financial crisis.’

The Treasury rejects Makin’s analysis and emphatically affirms that:

‘Rapid and large monetary and fiscal policy stimulus played a critical role in increasing effective demand and promoting the early recovery of consumer and business confidence in Australia.’

The myth of fastest debt

Benson and Makin regurgitate the Liberal Party and IPA talking point that the stimulus spending ‘saddled the nation with the fastest-growing public debt in the world’.

Blatantly false. Australia’s gross debt expanded from 9.7% of GDP in 2007 to 30.9% in 2013. That’s an increase by a factor of 3.19 in six years. New Zealand’s debt rose from 5.4% of GDP in 2008 to 25.5% in just five years — an increase by a factor of 4.72. Ireland’s debt increased by a factor of 5.03 in just five years. Iceland’s was multiplied by 3.47 in just four years.

Why such blatant porkies? Perhaps they think no-one will check. Significantly, all those countries are now steadily reducing their gross debt, while Australia’s is relentlessly expanding.

The myth of unproductive assets

Benson asserts that Makin ‘says the stimulus was “misconceived', with an emphasis on transfer payments and 'unproductive expenditure such as school halls and pink batts'.

Pure nonsense. As audits have proven, 99% of school and community buildings are in highly productive use and will continue so for another 100 years. 99% of the insulation is still saving energy costs and will do so for up to 150 years. All the other productive assets built – roads, rail, ports, defence housing, national parks, sports facilities and other assets – are still there and nearly all are either earning money or saving money.

The main outcome, of course, was that the stimulus spending built the best-performed economy the world had ever seen.
The myth of competitiveness

According to Benson:

‘Makin argues that the stimulus rolled out ... from late 2008 ultimately damaged the country’s competitiveness.’

According to the World Economic Forum, the opposite is true. Australia’s competitiveness ranking in 2006-07 was 19th out of 125 countries. This improved after the 2007 election to 18th in 07-08 and 08-09, then to an impressive 15th in 2009-10, as the stimulus response took effect. Since the Coalition took over, the ranking has slipped back. It is now 22nd.

Comparison with New Zealand

Makin rejects infrastructure spending and advocates instead

‘... tax relief and/or supply side reform, as occurred, for instance, in New Zealand, where marginal income tax rates were reduced, infrastructure was improved and the regulatory burden on business was lowered.’

There was indeed a stark difference between responses across the Tasman. In 2009, Australia's Opposition – led by Malcolm Turnbull at the time – opposed the second stimulus and urged New Zealand's supply side response.

We can now see the outcomes there:

eight negative quarters of GDP growth;
two years of deep recession;
unemployment up from 3.3% to 6.5% in eight months;
productivity declining for five straight quarters;
wages down for two straight quarters;
bankruptcies up 70% in two years;
government debt up from 5.4% of GDP to 25.5%; and
many Kiwis lost their livelihoods, their homes and their lives.

Those are the bullets Australia dodged when the Senate backed Rudd instead of Turnbull in 2009. Bizarrely, Makin seems unaware of this.

As a positive footnote, it appears former Treasurer Wayne Swan has responded to Makin and Benson, tweeting that it is indeed "fake news". This has been picked up by news.com, 9news, SBS and the Courier-Mail. The Sydney Morning Herald has also run a critical piece.

The Australian has not reported Swan’s tweet, but did run a response from shadow treasurer Chris Bowen. That follow-up also repeated many of the falsehoods in the original.

The battle for real news over fake news will be a long and arduous one, it seems.

Domain rejects News Corp's porn site advertising claim as REA's share price tumbles

Fairfax Media has hit back at a false report that Domain Group has taken advertising on porn sites, describing the story as "bile" and a reflection of News Corp Australia's "seemingly endless appetite for gutter dwelling".

The claim, published on Monday in the media section of The Australian, as well as Sydney's Daily Telegraph and Melbourne's Herald Sun, comes as Domain Group challenges rival REA Group as the country's number one property advertising site.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp Australia owns 61.6 per cent of REA Group.

The rise of Domain has seen REA Group's share price plunge. From a peak of $65.77 in July this year, the company's share price had dropped to just $45.50 by November. That wiped more than $1.6 billion from the value of News Corp's holding in REA Group.

REA Group remains on the list of most shorted stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange.

Fairfax Media chief executive Greg Hywood said the story was "wrong" and Domain had taken out no advertising on porn sites.

"We told The Australian it was wrong," Mr Hywood said. "We note they printed our quote. But they still had no hesitation in running the yarn. We generally ignore it. Not today."

A spokesman for Fairfax Media said screen shots provided to Fairfax Media "appeared to be links from a porn site to Commercial Real Estate", Fairfax Media's commercial property site, which is part of Domain Group.

"We did not authorise any advertising, re-targeting or redirections and believe it is a malicious scam/bot," Brad Hatch, director of communications for Fairfax Media, said.

Commercial Real Estate is challenging REA as the number one commercial property site in the country.

"Commercial Real Estate has been the focus of significant investment over the past 18 months," Melina Cruickshank, chief editorial and marketing officer for Domain Group, said. "To suggest we are inflating metrics via bots or cheap traffic sites is ridiculous."

Mr Hatch said Fairfax Media had undertaken a review on Monday morning.

"Our technical partners have confirmed that no advertising from us has been placed on porn or illegal sites. We have this morning asked News Corp's lawyers to provide us with any and all information they have on this matter so our technical people and independent advisers can more fully investigate the matter."

Mr Hatch said Fairfax Media would notify authorities of the findings and Fairfax would "fully co-operate with any inquiries that may be launched in relation to this matter".

Mr Hatch added: "News Corp has never had any shame about using their media platforms for attacks on competitors. They dress up their bile as news and bore the rest of the industry with their seemingly endless appetite for gutter dwelling."

Fairfax Media buys online marketing through a company called Pais Media, which has worked with the Domain team for three years.

Pais Media's director Josh Smith said the Domain contract had strict clauses that state that certain type of advertising categories are off limits.

"Gambling and adult sites are one of many categories that are excluded from the channels we manage for Commercial Real Estate," Mr Smith said.

"I can state that Domain has never purchased advertising through these channels."
