They do play poker machines, roulette, black jack you name it. They even have special buses along the North Shore to pick them up and take them to the casino daily.

I went to a luncheon a few weeks ago at a Club that I thought would be bustling but it was dead. I was talking to the Manager and he told me that it was because they didn't have enough poker machines for the Chinese. They had about 20.

One thing I have never been interested in is playing the pokies. I don't even buy a lottery ticket. One of my sisters was a gambler, I was with her one day when we went to a Club for lunch ... I saw her put through $500! She asked me why I wasn't playing (and that I should to keep her company), so I looked in my purse and I had 2 x $2 coins so I put those through and played with what dropped out ... that was it. She then told all and sundry that I was the last of the big spenders and had only put $4 though the pokies. Oh, she bet on the horses as well. Stupid waste of money!

Most of the people you see sitting at the poker machines are the Oldies, losing their Pension down the damn things.

Also in the 90s I worked with a guy whose wife (a Nurse) had wasted $17,000 in a few weeks on the pokies ... he showed me his Bank Statement which listed all the money she had used at a certain Club. He ended up divorcing her. $17,000 is not to be sneezed at .... how sad.

Hey Nef

One of our tenants came up to us recently. She wanted to explain the reason behind why she had given us notice.

NB This lady was in her mid 60's....an English/Aussie, elegant, hard working professional and intelligent, gorgeous Christian woman and ideal long term, clean/ tidy tenant.

So, we sat in the kitchen and over a cup of tea....she quietly broke down and spilled her woes.

Her marriage of 40 odd years was suddenly over.

She was broke. Her job was still ok....but given her age...for how long?

Her (now estranged) husband had gambled EVERYTHING they had...on the pokies.

All her savings were gone. Even her jewellery had been pawned without her knowledge.

The ultimate betrayal though was when she broke the news to their only child.....a son who was struggling with a heavy mortgage and a young family. Her son came clean about all the money he had given his dad behind his wife's back. Why? His dad would come up with sob stories about sudden and non existent medical bills.

What a terrible situation!

I told her that we intend to support her in her hour of need.

We'll help her move when she's ready and make sure she's ok.

In thanking me, she mentioned how she was now on anti depressants.....and that she had felt suicidal.

Sometimes rental returns need to take a back seat.

I believe this is one of those times.
I would rather die than sell my heart and soul to an online forum Anti Christ like you Monk

on ya lisa..

this is the insidious side of this disease we rarely see....they are so ashamed of it.. they dont reveal to anyone what they are going through...

my daughters father in law whom we will bury on Monday after a long illness.....had a gambling problem..they took all his money away from him.. all property was signed over into his wifes name.... yet because of on line betting both his wife and son had the pleasure of bailing him out...on more than one occasion

he finally got too sick to do it.. but I am sure he never gave up on the thrill or whatever it is they get from it...

they cannot see the harm it is doing.....I think its as bad as this ICE epidemic.. its cruel.

and I despise the govts fro reaping the rewards relentlessly by increasing these b loody money gobblers.

I do see it Cods and it is a disease. How can we help them? I don't think we can until they at least want to help themselves. It's like any addiction insofar as you have to admit you have a problem before you can seek help.

I assume that people start to gamble by either buying a Lottery ticket or playing the pokies because they think/hope they can win Big Money to set them up for Life. It doesn't work that way!

The ONLY way to get Big Money is to earn it, inherit it, or perhaps, marry it.

the major point is our govts at all levels are now so dependent on the taxes they reap.. they like the addict cannot do without it..

and we have to accept that every year they want more..

so how do they get MORE GAMBLING TAXES by allowing the places like CASINOS to have more machines....

it isnt rocket science...yet we as the people who pick up the tab at the end of the day...broken families.. people going bankrupt.. even suicide...
it all falls back on the general public in one way or another..

all sorts of things need changing no ATMs in clubs or casinos...no ifs or buts...people need to be members to use poker machines... yes pubs included..
that way at least a members card can be monitored....I have no idea how many clubs and pubs have poker machines on the central coast... but crikey $307Bn should be sending some kind of warning..they have a problem.

Neither do I ... lets blow it to Kingdom Come :P

Buddhism claims your incarnation and the parents you get are completely random.
But the Tibetan Book of the Dead (pre Buddhist Bon Lamaism) claims you can do just that (choose your parents) while in the Bardo (a sort of between life spirit world) if you're patient enough.
cods wrote: New figures released by Liquor and Gaming NSW show punters lost at least $306 million — or $1100 per adult — on the Coast’s 4673 poker machines ...
A band called 'The Whitlams' has a song called "Blow up the pokies" ... which I'm fine with because I never play them, but I don't like the Whitlams sob story music or their lefty undertones.

I don't mind the odd punt. Occasionally I'll bet on a horse (or box trifecta) or play Keno for 6 numbers. But I only gamble money I don't need ... that is, I can afford to throw it away. If I need it I don't punt it. It's just a matter of priorities.

This idea that problem gamblers are addicts is just a weak cop out IMO. It's greed/easy money/quick buck they're addicted to.
Which ultimately is a refusal to accept reality ... because "easy come, easy go" means they don't appreciate money when they've got it.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?
