Melbourne Cup 2016

Post by Black Orchid » Mon Oct 31, 2016 11:31 pm

Well there is only ONE Australian bred horse, Jemeka, in the Melbourne Cup tomorrow, out of a starting field of 24.

Does anyone else find that a bit dismal? Personally, I think it is a total disgrace.

Only if you think Australia no longer breeds and trains the world best horses like it used to...... then yeah.

Well all Australian horses would be nice.
Not calling it the EMIRATES MC might be nice.
But... people have sold out over the years so we are where we are. :sad

So true on many fronts.

The suggestion is we dont breed enough stayers

I assume the ones accepted have good form in distance races.

We can breed whatever we choose to breed and that includes stayers. The Melbourne Cup is our most prestigious race and we have sold out.

Calling it the Emirites Melbourne Cup was the start of the down slide. We just seem to sell out everything that epitomises Australia and we can't do it fast enough.

Maybe there arent enough long distance races in Oz for breeders to bother breeding stayers? They are in the game to make money you know!

I think the prize money offered has also attracted the overseas horses, if you recall say twenty to thirty years ago there might be a couple of NZ horses in the cup and nothing else from OS

Agree on the Emirates comment, surely QANTAS could have come forward with a reasonable offer!

Forgot it was Melbourne Cup Day. That must be why it was like a morgue at Kippax. Nobody around.
