The GP who ordered the original blood tests (he ordered a bunch of them as I was a new patient), told me that "in layman's terms" I had "too much iron in my blood". He prescribed the Mega B vitamins (with high B6) and after several blood tests to make sure, that fixed the problem. The girl at the Chemist at Kippax told me that this problem runs in her family and she has it as well. I had never heard of it. I have told family members to get tested and they are all OK. However, apparently it is quite common if you have Celtic ancestry.

you still have a Vitamin D deficiency? how can that be? it is easy to correct.
I used to have these strong sensations running up the back of my throat and then into my jaw which would start aching. I would have to take a soluble aspirin before it subsided. I went to the doctor thinking it might be heart related, but found out I had a Vit. D defiency. She or I didn't connect it with these "turns". A year or so later they started happening again. Again I was diagnosed with D deficiency even though I was taking the supplement daily, so I had to double the dose for a while and they immediately stopped. Now - I just double up once or twice a week.

After seeing the 4 corners documentary on Vitamin supplements recently I have to wonder though whether the Vitamins we take really are the strength they advertise.

I think everyone in Australia has a vitamin D deficiency, probably caused by the use of sunscreen .... or something. :rofl Even the Poms I know have vitamin D deficiency and it isn't always sunny over there. ;)

I take Vitamin D and my GP told me to take 2 in Winter, 1 in Summer and spend 10 minutes a day sitting in the sun ... :nah

Ten minutes is about the maximum I could stand in the heat on a hot summer's day now, but that prescription makes sense.

I definitely wouldn't be sitting in the sun for 10 minutes in Canberra's scorching Summer months. Early morning sun would be OK though.

I think the GP meant that I should sit out in the sun for 10 minutes each day, ALL year. I used to when I smoked but I gave that up years ago, I have no reason to sit outdoors for any length of time these days.
What are the symptoms of vit D deficiency?

Fatigue.
General muscle pain and weakness.
Muscle cramps.
Joint pain.
Chronic pain.
Weight gain.
High blood pressure.
Restless sleep.
I have absolutely none of those symptoms. I wonder what happens if you overdose on Vitamin D? :rofl

It's apparently dangerous if you overdose. There's a maximum limit you're allowed to take. I didn't have any of those symptoms - just that feeling that I was going to have a panic attack or a heart attack.

GPs tend to get sold on various pills and potions by the Salespeople and FREE stuff. This year, Vitamin D.

I doubt my GP likes me Googling and then telling him what my problem is.

What I have noticed is that everybody you talk to has just had a colonoscopy. FREE.
