My Batchelor of Engineering was YEARS ago, mid 70s in actual fact and gained through the Defence Forces in association with the Institute of Engineers. My current studies are through Defence (ADFA) in association with the University of NSW who have a campus on ADFA grounds. You would also be aware these days that although mathematics is one of the seven core competencies, under competency based and current university policy - in engineering anyhow - you only need to have the level of a subject as a core pre-requisite for the next - Mathematics can be done LAST if that's the way it pans out. Crikey, that changed in 1992 under Keating - at your age I thought you would now that! Perhaps you should ask "the twins" when they come home from Uni in the 4WD you and your forensic accountant hubby bought for them to attend their many degrees at prestigious schools

One thing that really is helping me - believe it or not - are the many little maths quizes etc that are on Facebook! I kept wondering why I was getting what were simple 1+1+1+11+1+1+11+1x0=? questions wrong? Then I was reminded of rules like BODMAS (that I had long forgotten) and it all fell into place. Funny how we forget the real basics after years of having it done electronically. The Maths teacher at TAFE won't let us use calculators unless he has maths problems that really need the extra "electronic" brain. I was always scared of maths at school - but have developed quite a love for it now

I loved math's at school, but when my children were teenagers - I couldn't help them with their homework - it was like a foreign language. Calculators would have to be the cause of so many people being hopeless these days. Mental arithmetic has been a godsend though. Pity it's not used much anymore. Your math teacher sounds like he's doing a good job.

I haven't noticed any math's quizzes on Facebook. Next time I'm on it - I'll have a look.
