I think so ... the DSP and the Carer's PENSION are about the same .... as far as I can gather .... 2 x those "benefits" would equal at least $1,000 per WEEK, perhaps more. They are definitely NOT "poor" ... thanks to us taxpayers.Black Orchid wrote:There is Carer's Allowance and there is Carer's Pension.

I think you will find that some pensions and allowances are mutually exclusive.

The Carer's Allowance and the Carer's Payment are 2 different things the payment is much more than the Allowance. To get the Payment you are basically a full time, live in Carer.Black Orchid wrote:There is Carer's Allowance and there is Carer's Pension.
Drs have ok'd the DSP for borderline health people who cannot live on Newstart and if you are long time unemployed then that's you, the DSP is much higher than Newstart which is below the poverty line. These days however you probably need to be an amputee or blind or deaf to get it.

I'm not so sure you even qualify just for being deaf or an amputee.Rorschach wrote:The Carer's Allowance and the Carer's Payment are 2 different things the payment is much more than the Allowance. Some deaf and amputee people WANT to work and get jobs. I have worked with many people who were "disabled". That's why I get pissed off with people who are considered TOO FAT getting the DSP.skippy wrote: I'm not so sure you even qualify just for being deaf or an amputee.
I worked with a young girl (Sandy) who suffered a "broken back" in an accident here in Canberra, back in the 80s. She was about 20, sitting in the middle of the rear seat with the lap strap. Her parents were driving and somebody hit them ...... can't remember all the details. Anyway, Sandy, was in Hospital for months .... she eventually came back to work ... in a Wheel chair, and did "donuts" wherever she could ... she was a breath of fresh air. LOL
I very much doubt that people like Sandy would want to be on the DSP.

Not everybody that has a disability is able to work...
Not everybody with a disability will be offered work or accepted to work.

What the governments need to do is stop employers using medical reasons to discriminate against people with disabilities working.
It's easy to say they want to work but it's much harder for many of them to find it.
They are in a catch twenty two in many cases, the govenment deems them capable of working but employers won't hire them because of their disabilities.

I had a look for the carers pension form last year. To be eligible the person you are caring for has to be a vegetable, which would exclude most people who are looking after someone with serious disabilities. As long as they can still pick up a spoon and feed themselves and use the bathroom independently - there's no point applying. It makes me wonder about all those people I've met over the years who look after friends or family who are classified as disabled, but don't seem to have a thing wrong with them.Neferti~ wrote:I think so ... the DSP and the Carer's PENSION are about the same .... as far as I can gather .... 2 x those "benefits" would equal at least $1,000 per WEEK, perhaps more. This is why the NDIS will be just another black hole for welfare bludgers who will use it for everything from back pain to mental illness just like the DSP.
Stupid fucking idea.
