She’s not the only kid whose father has died
Amanda Vanstone, a former immigration minister, couldn’t see what all the fuss was about around Bindi Irwin on Channel Nine’s panel show The Verdict and was having none of it.
“Give me a break,” she said. “She’s not the only kid whose father has died. My father died when I was young; it happens to lots of kids. It doesn’t make her special.
“How many years ago did her father die?”
Exactly. Bindi is all about ratings. Spare me the tears.

Amanda Vanstone has always been outspoken, nothing new about that.
Steve Irwin was only an "icon" with the Yanks. He wasn't well known in Australia (except for Queensland) until he died! The first I ever heard of him was from a couple of American epals and that was BEFORE he died. I asked "who?"
As far as Bindi is concerned. I never watch those type of TV programmes. I did see a picture in the online news today and wondered "WHO did her hair?" It looked pathetic.
Young Bob is already trying to catch crocs.

Amanda Vanstone is ok (pity she isn't Immigration Minister right now) and there is some merit in what she said. I don't watch DWTS but I have seen clips of Bindi's dancing on the TV and images of Steve were shown during her routines at least 2 or 3 times.
Steve Irwin died almost 10 years ago and, as tragic as it was, I think it is time to stop cashing in on his name and fame. I blame her mother for this. She always appeared to be pushy, hungry for the limelight and is now packing to go and live in LA.
Having said that, Bindi is only 17 years old and the few dance routines that I saw were excellent. I didn't see any of the other contestants dance but Bindi danced extremely competently and probably deserved to win on her own merit (without the pity props).

Steve was very popular in America. He was performing in Vegas last time I was there. No idea what he did. Catch crocs on stage?
Anyway, I would think that most Australians were well aware of Steve Irwin long before he died.

Americans are suckers for the Aussie accent. Add the accent to a guy like Steve and you have a star. I'd knew of him vaguely but never paid any attention to him or what he did. Bindi's mum seems to be the classic stage mother.

I never saw Steve Irwin's TV show "Crocodile Hunter". I never went to his Zoo.Black Orchid wrote:Steve was very popular in America. He was performing in Vegas last time I was there. No idea what he did. Catch crocs on stage?

I know he was very popular in the USA. As I said, I had never heard of him until an American epal mentioned him and that was way before he died.
I think a lot of Aussies only recognised Steve AFTER he died. There was much in the MSN about him then ... and his wife and kids. I do recall Steve carrying his baby, Bob, while catching a croc.
That was a man-eating sized croc, too.
I didn't think much of Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) either.

Yea I kind of think Bindis mum cashes in on the Erwin name and to be honest she drives me crazy, I think she is a fake.
I wonder where they got the name Bindi? I hope it was from bindi eyes.

Terri Irwin has done a wonderful job of raising her children. They both seem to be well balanced and happy. She was grief stricken for many years after her husband died, but she didn't waiver from her goal of keeping his memory alive. You can still see the grief in her face. I think Bindi has always had a very outgoing personality and wasn't forced to take her father's place. She's always appeared to enjoy being in the spotlight.
I was very impressed with Bindi's dancing. She dances better than she catches wild animals and she does that well.

Gotta love Naff's online persona. Always acting like she doesn't know popular figures, because she's too much of a hipster to watch the popular crap
Cool story, bro
Aussies knew who Steve Irwin was, they just weren't all that impressed. Mainly because his act was all about going around and poking animals, over-acting, and eventually, just doing fucking stupid shit (taking his infant kid into a croc pen was the Aus version of MJ hanging his baby out over a balcony). In the end, the stupid shit got him killed... which was the best option, I guess... because at least he didn't take anyone with him.
