Re: Weather Watch
When I lived in Japan, in spring, great yellow clouds would blow down from the hills covered with cedar trees.

Pine trees dominate the landscape here. I suppose after all the old hardwood growth was decimated long ago pine trees filled the vacancy.mantra wrote:Pine trees are ugly. I didn't know they had pollen until now. I had a large one removed from my garden. There is nothing positive about them.
Pine trees release their pollen during the spring. The pollen resembles yellow dust and coats sidewalks, shrubs and cars. The large grains of pollen fall downward and are not blown far by the wind.

I HATE the smell of conifers. Even worse than eucalyptus. I think it goes back to my childhood at an Aunts place, but can't recall what happened. Just the smell.

Re: Weather Watch
I love the smell of all trees, especially pine trees.
It's why I insist on a real Xmas tree .... it doesn't smell like Xmas otherwise.

Personally, I don't like conifers. You have to really love them to put them in your garden because they prevent seed germination by other species and you won't be able to grow anything else under or near them.

I think I recall reading that the sap of introduced pine trees is toxic to our Natives... if so, I should probably start using a banksia for a Xmas tree hu.

I don't care for conifers either, at least anywhere near a house. They belong in the mountains, not a garden. When I bought this house there were two huge cedars I had cut down because they gave a creepy dark vibe to the property.

Britain is in the middle of a heatwave, a real one.
Heatwave’ sends Britain into meltdown
You’d think they would be stoked. Britain, notorious for its grim, grey skies, summer rain and icy winters is in the middle of a heatwave. A real one.
Wednesday is predicted to reach about 34 degrees in London with a minimum of 19 in what could be the hottest day in nearly a decade. The Met Office said “the “heatwave” will only last a day or two, with temperatures dropping slightly by Thursday,” and is due to a rush of warm air from Europe.
You know, summer.
But rather than bask those sun-deprived bodies in the warmth, the country seems to have literally gone into meltdown with trains, tubes and public heath services from the NHS to aged care, the Lung Foundation and asthma sufferers all issuing warnings over the heat.
‘Baking Britain is hotter than the Sahara’ screamed The Sun this morning, while warning readers to watch out for dengue-fever carrying mozzies and asthma sufferers to carry an inhaler with them due to extreme pollen. Commuter newspaper Metro warned people to “stay inside” between 11am-3pm while The Times referred to it as “just short of a national emergency”. The Guardian is even live-blogging the great heatwave of 2015, with updates, warnings and tips on how to survive the weather.
Rail services are running constant reminders for passengers to carry water bottles and get off if they feel faint, while warning trains may be subject to delays with tracks buckling in the heat. Authorities at Wimbledon were forced to cut capacity by 5000 yesterday due to a lack of shade.
Meanwhile health services have warned everyone from the elderly to hayfever sufferers and new mums to watch their babies in the heat, while the government has an entire heatwave action plan. Brands are also scrambling to cash in with promos on everything from barbecues to swimwear and sunglasses.
