#2 Once invaded, we should have left those with admin experience in place to keep the place functioning.
In other words, you think we should have put the baath party back in charge. Or made our own holocaust.

Would have worked, you cannot dispute that Syria and Iraq were very stable internally and they're 3rd world military apparatus posed little or no external threat. These people respond well to harsh discipline and zero tolerance of there're religious zeal, which by the way is just an excuse for they're shit behaviour.

In what sense would putting the baath party back in charge have 'worked'?

Does their history not demonstrate an external threat?

Well for one the Baathists were in complete control of the areas now controlled by IS
They were not waging any wars on their neighbours and none of Gandalfs mates were going over there to play up
IS are very good at killing other Muslims however so it is not all doom and gloom
You cannot honestly tell me that these fukkers will or can be controlled by anything except a harsh authoritarian regime can you
As for being an external threat they have had their arses kicked within hours by western military's last time they put the gloves on(the Iraqis) and the Syrians haven't the firepower or the ambition todo jack shit other than give the Palestinians enough out of date weaponry to ensure the Jews keep knocking them arse over head from time to time.........but you know all this and are here for a :f

Obviously. To some extent they are the same people. Why do you argue that it counts as working for Baath to control these areas but it does not count as working for ISIS to control these areas?
They were not waging any wars on their neighbours
Not even Iran or Kuwait?
IS are very good at killing other Muslims however so it is not all doom and gloom
As was Saddam's regime. Again, why does only one count as working?
You cannot honestly tell me that these fukkers will or can be controlled by anything except a harsh authoritarian regime can you
Democratically elected governments can be harsh and authoritarian when necessary. Some say this is the reason for ISIS.
As for being an external threat they have had their arses kicked within hours by western military's last time they put the gloves on(the Iraqis)
Is this while they were not waging war on their neighbours?

How well do you think ISIS would stand up to a similar ground invasion?

FD, you remind me off the character in Monte Python's Holy Grail who'd had his arms and legs cut off but still wanted to fight on.
Your argument/s keep falling over because it/they have no legs.

Anyway, I find it interesting than everyone seems to be silent regarding Turkey's part in all this.
A large portion of IS recruits are Turks.
The Turkish Millî İstihbarat Teşkilatı ( MİT) - National Intelligence Organization - has been materially aiding IS with weapons and ammo.
Turkish police intercepted a convoy of weapons and ammo going into Syria under the pretense of humanitarian aid.
Those police were arrested and charged. Don't know if they were convicted of anything.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly supports the Muslim Brotherhood, who in turn are allied to IS.
And has refused permission for the US to launch sorties against IS in Syria and Iraq from US bases in Turkey, despite Turkey being a member of NATO.

In recent times President Erdogan has been pushing an Islamist agenda, amid criticism that he's defying the secularism of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's modern Turkey.
He's been routinely waving a Koran around at public rallies in defiance of Turkish laws prohibiting religion being used in politics.
Women are complaining they're being told to cover up with the hijab.
He recently ran a referendum along side the parliamentary election, trying to defer the PM's powers to the Prez and give the Prez virtual unchallengeable authority.
He lost his referendum and his party lost control of Govt, with the maior opposition party and the Kurds party taking power, but Erdogan's party still pulled 40% of the vote.

In 1999 I spent some time in a caravan park where there were numerous Turkish fruit pickers. Their young blokes eventually got friendly for somewhere to drink alcohol and smoke bongs outside of view of their elders.
They said they'd been wary of me because they thought I was an under cover cop. Bemused, I asked "Why?".
Turns out it was I had flat top hair cut, a black girlfriend they thought was my black tracker, a black & tan shepherd X they thought was my drug sniffer, and they could hear the police radio coming from my van - my scanner.

Anyway they'd bring their Turkish stringed instruments (as a cover for their oldies sake) and their grog. And I had weed.
Eventually the discussion turned to religion and they said they were muslims and wanted to give me an English translated Koran, which never happened.
When the topic of geo-politics and speculation of WW3 came up, they insisted WW3 will begin in Turkey.
I dismissed it out of hand at the time. Now I'm wondering if they knew something I was/am ignorant of?
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

Pick which ever cherry you like, it still doesn't justify an invasion on false pretenses.
But despite a war fought on the pretext of Weapons of Mass Disappearance having taken place,
keeping the Bath party as admin or exterminating them would have negated the drama called Islamic State.
End of story.

So the rest of the middle east would have watched on silently as we rounded up all the baathists and shot them?

Do you realise IS actually started in Syria?
