Thought I would begin one of these threads, just for amusement sake. BoM always gets it wrong ... or a day too early or late, etc.

Canberra is, apparently, in for it ... soon. Hope it buckets down, the garden and lawn could do with a good soaking.

Do you even live in Canberra, Naf? We've had the most consistent soaking rains throughout December that I can remember. Instead of brown, dried off grass (away from your sprinkler systems), there is actually green in the middle of Summer.

BTW, the BOM do a fucking awesome job, if you know how to interpret their predictions.

Yes, I live in Canberra and yes we had some rain during December but it is hot and dry at my place and there was no thunder or rain last night. Might have been elsewhere but my garden and lawn didn't see a drop of the wet stuff.

I thought I had created a WEATHER thread here, somewhere.

It appears we need to resuscitate it.

Canberra weather has deteriorated to Winter. Wild and Woolly with a "high" of 12C.

Sydney and places North are having a very bad deal of it. The ABC has pictures. Three dead in the town of Dungog.

Oh, and bloody gum trees. They do NOT belong in suburbia!





You have to have a good giggle. "Our" ABC always needs some sort of "disaster" to get themselves into gear and out of hounding Tony Abbott.

Eucalyptus should not be used as street trees. They have a shallow root system and need the protection of lots of other Eucalyptus trees around them to keep them semi sheltered. Council planners are idiots.

There are at lease 2 huge trees down around me and people must be without power as the power trucks have been trying to fix wires. In this day and age why do we not have underground power?

Trees down everywhere here...and yes they're gum trees (although some are bottle brush trees).

It hasn't stopped pelting & the wind is annoyingly loud.

We're still WITH power thank God.

One thing that's NOT good about hurrying everyone off to bed early in case of a blackout...is that they get up early the next morning...sigh.

Then again it's pretty hard to sleep with all that noise going on outside.

ALL services are underground in my Street. No poles to spoil the view of the Brindabellas.

I recall when I lived in Sydney that there was always a gum tree uprooted somewhere after a bit of a storm. They do not belong in suburbia!

Gum trees are fine as long as they've got space for their roots. I have a massive one at the back of my garden which also backs out onto another street. The electricity tree services were out the other day and seemed to be spending too much time cutting away at it. As they do each year - they left it unbalanced, but if it falls - it will land on my property - not the power lines. There are a lot of trees down in my area, but I think the worst is over.



Surrey Hills - it looks like the perfect place for a sink hole to develop.

Eucalypts have shallow roots? .... I was always under the impression Eucalypts have very deep roots are are required to prevent ground salinity from rising water tables/aquifers bringing the salt to the surface by drinking it. And removing vast areas of Eucatypts, replacing with shallow rooted food crops and then over irrigating is causing huge tracts of OZ
t become salt pans.
High winds bring down Eucalypts pretty regularly around me, but they usually snap off rather than uproot, except during very wet periods.
I've noticed removing a large Eucalypt often causes a bog hole where vehicles and farm machinary sink. Some times we've filled such holes with rock. But they just seem to sink too.

I'm fond of various types of Fig trees, which is fine on rural properties but a problem for pipes and foot paths in suburbia due to their shallow butressing root systems.

Obviously not as extreme as down South but it's been pretty chilly recently in the hills up here. As for rain, I wanted it to stop raining about 4 months ago to let the ground dry out and slow the grass growth which is reaching head high. I blew the oil seals in my brush cutter by running with too much oil and am yet to repair - been busy.
