Spanish prostitutes are to be awarded the same rights as other workers, entitling them to claim benefits if they are unemployed.

Judge Juan Augustín Maragall, sitting in Barcelona, ruled that prostitutes should be given a contract by their employers, who should also pay their social security contributions.

The ruling has set a precedent when some claim that Spain’s economic crisis has forced more women to sell sex.

The judge issued the ruling after presiding over the case of Xcenter, a business raided by police on suspicion that it was offering the services of prostitutes despite masquerading as a massage parlour.

In giving his verdict in the civil case, brought over a breach of labour regulations, the judge went further than expected, ruling that the women’s rights had been flouted by the management and forcing the company to pay the social security payments of three prostitutes backdated to 2012.

Because of the ruling all brothels will be forced with immediate effect to issue contracts to staff and pay their social security contributions.

Prostitution occupies a legal limbo in Spain. It is not illegal, but it is against the law to make money from pimping, which carries a four-year jail term.

Conxha Borrell, of the Association of Sex Professionals, welcomed the ruling, which gives prostitutes better employment rights in Spain than almost anywhere in the world.

“We work in the service sector so why shouldn’t we have the same working rights as other people?” she asked.

A report in 2007 found that there were 400,000 sex workers in Spain, but prostitutes’ groups say that this figure has risen sharply during the economic crisis.

Efforts to find a national consensus on how to deal with the rise in prostitution, such as banning sex adverts in newspapers, have failed amid disagreements between political parties.

In 2012 Barcelona opted to fine clients of prostitutes as well as pimps. Customers face a fine of €300 for “negotiating for sex” in the street, €750 for doing so within 200 metres of a school, and €1,500 to €3,000 for having sex in a public place.

Prostitution, drugs trafficking and illegal weapons sales contributed €9 billion to Spain’s gross domestic product in 2013. Prostitution, which was calculated by estimating the number of sex workers and brothels, contributed 0.35 per cent of GDP. The drugs trade made up 0.5 per cent. The data was requested by the EU to calculate the real size of member states’ economies.

I'm not an escapee, well not from the law anyway. When I was on the run, it was from an outlaw club I quit (19 years ago at Easter) and went to war against.
I handed my clours in and 2 hours later I had to put a 45/70 in my chapter sargeant's face when they tried to home invade me to take my bikes.
My time spent in maximum security at Parramatta was because I was speeding (20k over) on an unregistered rubber glide along Heathcote Rd. When the jacks spun around, I made them chase me. When they eventually cornered me at Holsworthy I was carrying my weed [which I managed to dump], my sister's speed, a cut down semi auto .22 with shell catcher, silencer and laser sight, plus a knuckle duster style fighting knife and a 12 inch shifter. A night I'll never forget.
And when I turned up in Parramatta gaol at Easter 97 I didn't know they were handing out easter eggs in the chapel.

It's a very long story, in which they set my (abandoned) rented house in Condel Park/Bankstown on fire [dopey pricks shut the door behind them and the fire went out], tried to set one of my father's factories on fire [poured petrol under the roller door, which just burnt the roller door] and burnt my grandparent's farm house to the ground [for which I lost my share of inheritance on the farm].
So of course when their club house and 2 member's houses burnt down 1 week after my release from Parramatta, everybody including the Organised Crime squad thought I did it.
Truth is I didn't even know until they asked me about it. Then I hired a ute so I go look for myself.
