Very Cute, Boxy. Does she have a name?boxy wrote:Dude, keep that thing under control when you're out amongst others
Got a new pup here too.
Thought my old bitch was past it (12 or so years old) and only has one row of teats left (cancer), but she raised a couple of pups. Sold one off, and kept the bitch that looked almost exactly like her (and her mother before her). I think she's going to make a top work dog

Well, you could click on the picture, and probably find out, but her name is Penny (daughter of Jenny, which can get confusing for them, when they're working together)

I happen to like dogs and they like me too. I thought she was a cute puppy. Obviously a working dog, but you still love them as they are "family", hey?boxy wrote:Well, you could click on the picture, and probably find out, but her name is Penny (daughter of Jenny, which can get confusing for them, when they're working together)
Penny daughter of Jenny sounds fine to me. I did even go to the Canberra "trials" back in the early 90's. Working dogs showing their skills with sheep. Time you stopped thinking everyone was against you ... we ALL have something in common.

Time you stop thinking that because someone dares to have a go at you when you spout shit, it's because they are paranoid. Also time to stop dragging it into other threadsNeferti~ wrote:Time you stopped thinking everyone was against you ... we ALL have something in common.

Re: Hill billy capers
Generally I do. I had been at an all weekend birthday party on that property a fortnight ealier. 1st night I kept both dogs tied to the truck most of the time, as there were numerous other dogs there too, and with a pig on the spit, bits of fatty meat and bones being tossed around. Later on that 1st night I let my dogs off and there were no dramas.boxy wrote:Dude, keep that thing under control when you're out amongst others
So when I was there drinking recently I mistakenly assumed the dogs would be fine as they all seem to get along.
Gemma (my pig dog bitch) is very strong physically (has knocked me off my feet literally twice) but generally quite placid. Although several weeks ago I went for a hunt down Gin Gin Ck, got nothing, and while returning home my red cattle dog (Fred) darted in under some lantana and attacked a dingo/feral cross.
They were roughly the same dimensions but my dog being better fed was a touch heavier and got the better of the feral. I called him off and the feral attacked Gemma. Big mistake, Gemma slammed him onto his back and pinned him to the ground by the throat. There was a fair bit of blood and the feral couldn't growl or whimper properly because she was choking it.
Then for night after night both dogs would almost constanly bark and kept charging off into the scrub on next block (unoccupied). I was beggining to wonder if I was under surveilance again and some jacks were watching from the adjacent hill. But aprox 2 weeks ago they barked, growled and charged down the track towards next block at 3 in the morning.
I thought "Not this $#!+ again" and took my time getting dressed. Then I heard my red dog yelp and I thought "Someone's just hit my dog". Went down track with machete toward next block where my dogs were and a pack of feral/dingo crosses (at least 4) took off.
Since then Gemma has been more agressive at night.
Good looking dog box man. I like the intelligence and agility of Kelpies.boxy wrote:Got a new pup here too.

Recently heard that some cattle dog breeders use ducks to teach their pups how to round up/muster/heard other animals. Sounds like a good tactic.

Re: Hill billy capers
I've heard of people training on ducks/chickens. But I try to keep my dogs away from poultry. Unless you keep them tied up whenever you're not actively keeping an eye on them, it can get messy. I remember one of my first dogs cleaning up a heap of my grand dad's chickens. He was good about it, I replaced them, but you know it hurt.
Ever since, I've either kept my dogs away from birds, or made it damn clear to them that they weren't even meant to look at them (and not trusted them until they got the message). Their nature is to chase anything that runs. For big dogs, it includes humans

There's not much anyone can tell me about dogs love for birds.
But this [duck] method is for pups only. Remember young pups are clumsy, so a slow and passive creature like a duck sounds ideal for training an animal still to develop its co-ordination. A chook would probably peck a pup's eye out.
The idea is, breeders can sell pups as 'trained'.

Re: Hill billy capers
Had another snake in donga event.
A week or so ago I came out of the donga and saw a black tail slide in under the tray on my ute. Figuring it'd go away sooner or later, or be taken for a ride at some time, I ignored it.
About half to one hour later I went into the donga and heard a noise which at first I thought was a hiss. Between some old sump oil containers and plastic storage containers up against the wall near the door way was a 5 foot long Black snake (small head but fat body).
I chased it around with a machete and can of Black & Gold surface spray for 10-15 minutes before it went back outside into the chest high grass.

Re: Hill billy capers
Always liked castles and would love to have one of my own.
But figured it'll probably never happen, where as a fortress is feasible.
Then I saw on telly how the Irish built their castles. Not from sandstone blocks, but frm
whatever rock was available in its natural shapes.
The foreman on a farm I worked on said t others about me
"You watch, he'll have a fort on that property one day"
When relayed back to me, I just smiled and said
"He's got me pegged better than I thought"
Anyway, yesterday I acquired my first piece of my fortress/castle ...
The door is 1 inch thick cast iron and the door jam/frame around it is 1/2 inch thick X 3 inch deep steel.
Killed this critter trying t set up camp under Fred's (my red cattle dog) kennel [sits on 4 ft X 4 ft wooden pallet] last night.
I let the black snakes and pythons live at my place, but these things are very agressive and highly territorial, and I'm buggered if I'm letting it take over my camp site r claiming my dam as its own. And yes they do hunt at night, thus the name.
