Putin is your bloke with the Napoleon syndrome ... he's 5'7" ...... almost a midget but acting the tuff guy. Abbott is 5'11" I think so would have to squat to look at Putin "shirt frontally", or eye-to-eye. John Howard is around the same size as Putin but since he had his eyes "lasered" he looks silly. He needs glasses to look his age.

Russia sends warships towards Australia before G20 meeting
DateNovember 12, 2014 - 6:45PM

Russia has sent a fleet of warships towards Australia in an apparent display of muscle-flexing ahead of the G20 meeting amid tensions between the two countries over the MH17 crash.

Defence announced late on Wednesday it is "monitoring Russian naval vessels that are currently transiting through international waters to the north of Australia".

It stressed: "The movement of these vessels is entirely consistent with provisions under international law for military vessels to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters."

It comes as Prime Minister Tony Abbott had a sharp meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on the sidelines of the APEC summit, during which they discussed the MH17 crash.

Defence noted that Russia had sent naval battle groups to international meetings previously.

"Russian naval vessels have previously been deployed in conjunction with major international summits, such as the APEC meeting in Singapore in 2009. A warship from Russia's Pacific Fleet also accompanied former Russian President Medvedev's visit to San Francisco in 2010," its statement said.

Russia's TASS news agency reported late last month that the battle group, led by a Slava-class cruiser that is capable of carrying nuclear-tipped cruise missiles, left from Vladivostok on October 23.

The fleet is made up of the "Varyag" cruiser, a destroyer named "Marshal Shaposhnikov", a salvage and rescue tug and a replenishment oiler.

It is understood the Russians have in recent years increasingly been making such gestures and it is widely regarded in defence circles as a way of Moscow flexing its muscles and showing that it can project force around the globe.

Defence said in its statement that all further inquiries should be referred to the Russian authorities.

A spokesman for the Russian Embassy could not be reached for comment.

Vladimir Putin is acting like 'a mid-20th century tyrant' who will 'pay the price' over Ukraine, says Britain's Philip Hammond

The British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, has accused Russia’s Vladimir Putin of acting like a “mid-20th century tyrant” and warned that he will “pay the price for what he is doing in Ukraine”.

Mr Putin is due discuss the ongoing Ukrainian crisis with the German chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Francois Hollande today, in a phone call that will also involve the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko.

Mr Hammond said a decision on whether Britain would help arm the Ukrainian military was “under review”, and demanded Russia withdraw its troops not only from Donetsk but also from Crimea, which Putin annexed in March last year.

“Don't make it sound like that is an outrageous thing for us to demand [of Mr Putin],” the minister told Sky News’ Murnaghan programme.

“This man has sent troops across an international border and occupied another country's territory in the 21st century acting like some mid-20th century tyrant.

“We do not behave like that. Civilised nations do not behave like that in the 21st century. We live in a rules-based society. We want the Russian people to be part of that international community.

“We want Russia to enjoy the kind of economic growth and rising standards of living that people in the rest of Europe enjoy and we do not see any reason to tolerate this kind of outrageous and outdated behaviour from the Kremlin.” Ukraine crisis: A timeline of the conflict

Mr Hammond dismissed a claim from France’s Mr Hollande that current talks were the “last chance for peace” in Ukraine – noting that a military conflict is already under way. But he agreed that a political solution was the only way to end the crisis, adding that “the Kremlin, Mr Putin, has to understand he will pay a political and economic price for what he is doing in the Ukraine”.

At least 5,000 people have been killed in eastern Ukraine since April 2014, when the country's Russian-backed president Viktor Yanukovich was forced out during mass street protests in Kiev.
