Boys behave badly when surrounded by better-off families
Well, this is one for the books overturning the wisdom of our social integration policies. Maybe the rich have known this all along. I have had no personal experience on this. Have any of you.
I grew up poor in a poor housing commission estate in the bush. Even those we thought were rich were not. They just had money to afford a house and a yearly holiday.
Interesting that girls are unaffected.
Boys behave badly when surrounded by better-off families
The best behaved lived in communities with those of similar poverty
Boys from poor families do worse when they grow up in the shadow of wealth and would benefit more from living in ghettos, research suggests.
It challenges decades of policy-making which assumes that socially mixed areas benefit children from deprived backgrounds.
Boys from low-income homes who were surrounded by affluent neighbours were more likely to lie, cheat, swear, fight and become delinquent, academics found. Such boys were distressed at being surrounded by well-off residents, whereas girls were relatively unaffected by their surroundings.
Conversely, boys from well-off homes behaved worse when they lived in deprived neighbourhoods, possibly because of higher levels of crime and less social cohesion.
Psychologists from American and British universities analysed research involving 1,600 children, from their birth to the age of 12, living in cities and suburbs in England and Wales.
The greater the wealth gap between poorer boys and their neighbours, the worse the effects on their behaviour, academics discovered. They used a frog pond analogy to explain how poorer boys assessed their rank and worth by comparing with those in their immediate surroundings. The best behaved lived in communities with those of similar poverty, those in averagely mixed neighbourhoods behaved worse and those in the most affluent areas were the most antisocial.
As well as statistics from a longitudinal study, researchers conducted intensive home assessments with the children, questioned their teachers and neighbours, collected census information and parent reports, and used internet street view images to gauge conditions such as housing, parks and levels of graffiti within a half-mile radius of each child’s home.
Candice Odgers, of Duke University in North Carolina, the lead author of the report, said: “Our hope was that we would find economically mixed communities that allowed low-income children access to greater resources and the opportunity to thrive. Instead we found what appears to be the opposite effect.”
Professor Odgers worked with psychologists from King’s College London.
Children’s antisocial behaviour was measured aged 5, 7, 10 and 12. The report said: “For each 10 per cent increase in neighbourhood poverty, children’s antisocial behaviour decreased.”

They could go either way. Poor boys surrounded by wealth could possibly aim for a more prosperous lifestyle as adults through dedication and hard work. Alternatively they could turn to larceny to boost their income. This could also apply to rich boys who end up committing white collar crime as an easy cash fix.
In the 60's people with a bit of money didn't seem to flaunt it. In recent decades though I've noticed that people with less money seem more generous than those who have plenty.

I never had any brothers or sons, so have no idea about this.

The part where someone did a scientific study...
... what is your insightful proclamation based on, bitch?

Roach,
Why don't you believe it. Why is it rubbish?
1. Large sample set
2. Followed from birth
3. Multiple society elements, city and the burbs
4. Head Shrinkers from 2 countries.
5. A peer reviewed report
The bit that is interesting is the findings. Don't you agree with the finding, the methods or what? and why?

Sounds meaningful to me.Psychologists from American and British universities analysed research involving 1,600 children, from their birth to the age of 12, living in cities and suburbs in England and Wales.

Re: Boys behave badly when surrounded by better-off families
We've had lots of so-called "Scientific" studies that have been absolute rubbish.
BTW this is not claiming to be a "Scientific" study at all.
Oh and the premise itself here is ridiculous. That being...
Boys behave badly when surrounded by better-off families
Total rubbish...
As for their parameters, variables and assumptions... puhlease...
If you both can't see that... I suggest you'll miss the point in reading The Emperor's New Clothes.
You both will agree with the theory of AGW and treat it as Gospel.
And someone is bound to sell you both the Sydney Harbour Bridge before very long.
Now SN you want me to run a study??????? To disprove what my life experience has taught me about the realities of life
BTW this is not claiming to be a "Scientific" study at all.

Sounds like to be that you disregard as rubbish anything that other invest time and energy into following a scientific process that is peer reviewed and published if you feel it is not aligned with your world view.Rorschach wrote:We've had lots of so-called "Scientific" studies that have been absolute rubbish.

That is just arrogance and ignorance.
I too intuitively think the same however I consider what they are saying and see that it has a statistical relevance. "“For each 10 per cent increase in neighbourhood poverty, children’s antisocial behaviour decreased." This result forces us to reconsider some of our social engineering.... don't you think?
As far as global warming goes. Just because you disagree with it, doesn't make all science rubbish.
