Australia has had megadroughts for the last thousand years says ice core study

A new study of Law Dome Ice cores tells us that droughts are common in Australia, and that there appears to be eight mega-droughts over the last thousand years, including one that lasted a whopping 39 years from 1174- 1212AD. By their reckoning the 12th Century in Australia was a shocker with 80% of it spent in drought conditions. Things weren’t so bad from 1260 – 1860, at least, as far as they can tell. The researchers are convinced theirs is the first millennial-length Australian drought record. It does seem significant.

Bushfire response: disaster spending faces overhaul amid calls for climate action

Coalition signals funding focus could shift from disaster recovery to reducing risks as Greens call for government to ‘put their climate denial behind them’

The federal government has signalled it wants to reduce spending on natural disaster recovery and shift its focus to reducing the risks before an event strikes.

The Greens renewed their calls for the government to take strong action against climate change while fire crews worked to contain blazes in South Australia and Victoria on Sunday.

The justice minister, Michael Keenan, did not directly respond to the climate change criticism, but said the government would speak to state and territory leaders about shifting spending from post-disaster support to upfront mitigation activities.

Earlier, the Greens leader, Christine Milne, said the government “really must put their climate denial behind them” because such an approach was “costing the country dearly”.

“Every year, we are going to face these extreme weather events which are going to cost lives and infrastructure. Enough is enough,” Milne said.

“The Abbott government has to stop climate denial and help to get the country prepared to adapt to the more extreme conditions.”

Milne began her remarks by saying her thoughts went out to the communities currently threatened by bushfires and to the firefighters and emergency services risking their lives to save people, houses and communities.

She said the government should “look at the suffering” and commit to strong climate action.

Asked whether it was too soon to make such comments given that homes and lives remained under threat, Milne said: “It’s absolutely true that many more homes are at risk in South Australia and as I stand here it is still unclear how many homes have already been lost. It is absolutely the time to talk to Australians about the need to prepare for this.”

Milne said actions needed to prepare for extreme heat included “looking at the adequacy of our emergency services, increasing the number of firefighters, improving our health response, our emergency response”.

“We have to do these things, but if you refuse to acknowledge you have got a problem [with climate change], you don’t prepare for it and then the situation is worse,” she said.

The Productivity Commission’s draft report said natural disasters since 2009 had claimed more than 200 lives, destroyed 2,670 houses and damaged a further 7,680.

The report said increased costs of natural disasters had “mainly been driven by population growth, increased settlement in areas that are exposed to disaster risks and increased asset values” but also warned that “projections suggest that climate change could increase the frequency and intensity of some extreme weather events and potentially natural disasters”.

“Current government natural disaster funding arrangements are not efficient, equitable or sustainable,” the draft report said.

“They are prone to cost shifting, ad hoc responses and short-term political opportunism. Groundhog Day anecdotes abound.”

The draft report called for states to shoulder a greater share of recovery costs and for the federal government to increase mitigation funding to the states.

It also said households and businesses should be relied on to manage disaster risks to their assets with insurance. It called for greater transparency on potential hazards, raising concern that land-use planning was “not always incorporating natural disaster risk”.

So according to The Greens our bushfires are not a natural part of the Australian environment at all... that millenia of evolution in which our plant life have adapted to use fire as part of the germination process is a great big lie... it's Abbott that is the problem and climate change denial...

The upward march of the world’s average temperature since 1891 is a trademark of human-influenced global warming with 2014 being the latest stop on the climb.

It’s official: 2014 has taken the title of hottest year on record. That ranking comes courtesy of data released Monday by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the first of four major global temperature recordkeepers to release their data for last year.

The upward march of the world’s average temperature since 1891 is a trademark of human-influenced global warming with 2014 being the latest stop on the climb. All 10 of the hottest years have come since 1998.

The average temperature was 1.1°F above the 20th century average according to JMA’s data. That edges 1998, the previous warmest year, by about 0.1°F.

One big difference between 2014 and 1998 is that the latter was on the tail end of a super El Niño, which has the tendency to spike temperatures. In comparison, 2014 was the year of the almost El Niño.

Instead, record warmth in other parts of the Pacific as well as the hottest year on record in Europe were some of the main drivers in fueling the heat. Joe Romm of Climate Progress also notes that heat in Australia early in the year and California’s hottest year further contributed to the heat.

Seasonal temperatures also paint a picture of a planet that didn’t get a break. Spring, summer and fall were all record-setting hot. Last winter was the only season not to set a record, and even that was still the sixth-warmest winter.

JMA is one of the four major groups that use both ground measurements and satellites to compute the planet’s average temperature. The other three include NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. and the Hadley Center in the U.K. There are subtle differences in how they analyze temperature data, but there’s generally broad agreement, particularly the upward trend in temperatures over the past century.

The other groups are expected to release their data in the coming weeks and confirm that 2014 was indeed the hottest year on record. And some scientists think it could get even hotter sooner. Strong trade winds in the Pacific have likely had a dampening effect on the global average temperature by essentially allowing the ocean to store more heat, but those winds are expected to weaken in the near future as part of a natural fluctuation.

Wrong wrong wrong.... lie lie lie.... for the last week the luvvies have been trying to build it up all over the media, but unfortunately for them, I was correct and it is only the 3rd hottest on our dubious records that go back a piddling 100-150 years.
Now if the CO2 has kept going up and the predictions for the last 17 years has been for exponential increases, why has it not happened if their THEORY was correct.
Why was it the 3rd hottest year and not the HOTTEST year?
If as they claim the CO2 tax mad such a difference why are they shooting themselves in the foot again by making such false claims now?
BTW a hot or cold year in Japan does not make it global...

Global Highlights
The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for November 2014 tied with 2008 as seventh highest in the 135-year period of record, at 0.65°C (1.17°F) above the 20th century average of 12.9°C (55.2°F).
The global land surface temperature was 0.82°C (1.48°F) above the 20th century average of 5.9°C (42.6°F), the 13th highest for November on record. For the global oceans, the November average sea surface temperature was 0.59°C (1.06°F) above the 20th century average of 15.8°C (60.4°F), record high for November.
The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for the September–November period was 0.70°C (1.26°F) above the 20th century average of 14.0°C (57.1°F), the warmest such period on record.
The September–November worldwide land surface temperature was 0.90°C (1.62°F) above the 20th century average, the ninth warmest such period on record. The global ocean surface temperature for the same period was 0.63°C (1.13°F) above the 20th century average, record high for September–November.
The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for the year-to-date (January–November) was 0.68°C (1.22°F) above the 20th century average of 14.0°C (57.2°F), the warmest such period on record.

Oceans not acidifying – “scientists” hid 80 years of pH data

Empirical data withheld by key scientists shows that since 1910 ocean pH levels have not decreased in our oceans as carbon dioxide levels increased. Overall the trend is messy but more up than down, becoming less acidic. So much for those terrifying oceans of acid that were coming our way.

We were told that coral reefs would crumble, crabs and molluscs would be unable to build their protective shells, the ocean food chain would collapse, and therefore the global food chain would fall apart.

Clearly the ten year moving average of ocean pH since 1910 has a slight upward curve. This means that in fact the alkalinity of the ocean has increased, not decreased. It has become LESS ACIDIC. The researchers Feely and Sabine would have known this. But it suited their purpose to truncate the data to start in 1988 to allow them to show a falling pH level over that relatively short period instead of the actual long-term increasing trend.

Wallace says: “Oceanic acidification may seem like a minor issue to some but, besides being wrong, it is a crucial leg to the entire narrative of ‘human-influenced climate change’.”

He adds: “In whose professional world is it acceptable to omit the majority of the data and also not disclose the omission to any other soul or Congressional body?”

What we have here is one of the basic foundations of the climate change scare, that is falling ocean pH levels with increased atmospheric CO2 content, being completely dismissed by the empirical ocean pH data the alarmist climate scientists didn’t want to show anyone because it contradicted their ‘increasing ocean acidity’ narrative.
