Grid Iron players have to endure many more head collisions than league/union/AFL players because of those helmets (and the other padding they wear). I would expect they come out about even on damage inflicted, despite the added "protection" worn.

I think you are correct. They call it Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

So they are go for the league who operates their own health and safety protocols.

And yes my point is that like boxers footballers here and in the US do get brain injuries.
But they do not play a game with a bat and ball. Cricket and Baseball are not an equivalent to football, except in the broadest sense in that they are sports. I hardly thing the former are considered contact sports like the latter are.

Yes they do on some teams. It's not mandatory, but some players, particularly the juniors often want this protection. I have witnessed it often in the past.

Interestingly, other than the goalie, field hockey players can't wear helmet (except in special circumstances).

Well boxy about 20 years ago the argument was that grid-iron players inflicted more damage on themselves due to the gear they wear.
