Who has a smart phone - what do you think

Post by Super Nova » Sun Nov 30, 2014 4:26 pm

I love my smart phone.

It has changed my life probably for the worse.

This is how I reflect on it.

1. Mail

Benefit: Always reachable - always working
Con: My life is always in work mode even when on leave

2. Contactable

Benefit: Wife can call me anytime any where... so can customers and work.
Con: Wife can contact me anytime. I remember the days I could go out... play up and get home when I wanted to. Now..... well... I'm always reachable and god forbid my battery dies or I don't hear it ring if there is an emergency at home.

Seriously... it has made people rely on other people too much when things go wrong.

3. Cheap Texts
I use Whatsapp

benefit: Free texts anywhere in the world and it is far more reliable nd faster then SMS texting. Great app.
Con; None

4. Mapping

benefits; I can use the map to know where I am and get me were I need to go. It was great walking around London. No more paper maps.
Con: I get lazy and stop learning directions

5. Video

Benefits: I can see my daughter and talk to her when away
Con: Need to connect to Wifi when abroad or if cost a bomb. Poor quality sometimes

6. Games

benefits: Fills in time
Con: should be focused on real life.

7. Any many more...............

Doesn't everyone have a smart phone now? I fair dinkum have not seen a phone that just makes phone calls for a couple of years, though I'm sure someone still has one.
As for their worth, well I like mine but it is still too small to do too much with. I was away on holidays a couple of months ago, during the election for here actually, and all I had was my iphone which is only a 4s and it is so hard to read posts let alone make them that I don't bother.
On the other hand, I no longer wear a watch( and I'm a watch maker by trade, though I have not worked as one for over thirty years I still love mechanical watches).
I no longer bother with an alarm clock or calendar.
I get news updates, music, emails, messages and even phone calls on my iphone.
I have considered buying the new iphone six big mother but I couldn't fit it in my jeans pocket.

This is my phone.

It's the only one I could find that survived my lifestyle. So it depends how you define a "smartphone", I guess. It get's internet access (only use it for weather, mostly, as it's "browser" is limited), takes photos, plays music, has a couple of games on it and can access email (although I havn't bothered figuring out how). Don't think it has any "apps" and doesn't have a touchscreen.

I see heaps of these around, amongst people who do physical work.

Waiting for one of these to arrive in the next day or so as a replacement for 6" model that I have managed to smash the glass on twice.

I used to be an apple phone fan but they are well out of the ballpark on pricing compared to china android phones which offer far more bang for buck.
I can buy 5 of these compared to the apple and I'm not tied to shitty iTunes plus you can receive files through email, save and edit them unlike the apple ecosystem.

I think if you are a die hard apple fan no-one can convince you otherwise.

They invented todays smart phone and the eco system.

Others will improve on it.

I don't like their eco system however I like how everything works nicely with everything else. It just works.

I have only owned an IPod. Had to sign-up to iTunes to get the songs I loaded details. Passed credit card and never purchased a song.

In fact I started my library by getting a copy of all the songs from an Amsterdam Coffee Shop owner and then loaded every CD I every bought. Now I need to move these songs to a new forma/player. Any suggestions?

I am the only person I know without a smart phone. I think they are transforming human behaviour in a fundamental way, much like land lines did long, long ago. Was at a restaurant recently waiting for a table. I looked over at an alcove that contained a handful of people all sitting while they waited for a table as well. Not too many years ago those people would have been talking and smiling to each other. No more. They all had their smart phones out ignoring each other until the hostess came to seat them.

I've got a smart phone - an iphone 4, but rarely bother to recharge it. If I traveled a lot - I would probably use it more, but in my case it's useful mainly for photos. Mostly I use my laptop and message through Facebook. I have a good deal on my landline for local and long distance calls and the internet. I don't need more than that.

They have transformed human behaviour. People have become addicted to their phones and often don't even look where they're going anymore. They're falling down stairs, onto railway tracks and walking in front of cars etc.

I've got one of these. Carry it with me wherever I go. Have downloaded a few Apps and various games, etc. It's linked to my WiFi so can use the Internet if I want to.

PS. I definitely do NOT walk around with it up to my ear hole! :rofl
