Y'know this supposed 16 or 17, or some now say 18 year hiatus of GW?
Well I was wondering how someone could come to such a conclusion in spite of the instrumental record.
Because such a claim is contradictory of the temperature records.
So on the one hand we have characters claiming GW has abated or stalled, and on the other we have a temperature record showing the 10 hottests years on record all occurred within the last 16 years.
Clearly this supposed halt or hiatus of GW is just fiction.
10 Warmest Years on Record Globally
http://www.climatecentral.org/gallery/g ... s-globally
It’s official: 2013 is tied with 2003 as the fourth warmest year for Planet Earth since modern record-keeping began more than 130 years ago. The mean global temperature rose 1.12°F above the 20th century average. That means the 10 warmest years on record have all happened since 1998, with 2010 still on top as the warmest of all. The only year in the entire 20th century that was warmer than 2013, and the only one remaining in the top 10, was 1998. This also marks the 37th straight year where the global temperature was above the long term average.
All of this makes it pretty clear that global warming hasn’t stopped. Even though the rate of warming may have slowed since the 1980s and 1990s, the planet continues to heat up. It’s also worth noting that this year's global ranking came outside of an El Nino event, which tends to drive up global temperatures. The last El Nino happened in 2009-2010 and the last strong El Nino was 1997-1998.
The global number might seem at odds with what we’ve experienced here in the U.S. where the Central U.S. was one of the few land areas cooler than average. However, the 2013 average temperature in the lower 48 states was still above average, coming in as the 37th warmest on record. But when you open up to the global picture, large parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America were much warmer than average while Australia had its hottest year on record. Australia's temperature was 2.31°F above normal, beating the previous record set in 2005 by 0.31°F. Higher temperatures weren't limited to land either, large sections of the Atlantic and Indian oceans were also well above average.
NASA also released their global numbers — putting 2013 in a tie with 2009 and 2006 for the seventh warmest year on record. Their records also go back to 1880. Although they use a slightly different method for analyzing the temperature data, the difference in calculations are very small.

Well I'll let IQS explain that to you Yogi... but even the IPCC admit it...
IPCC Climate Scientist: Global Warming ‘Pause’ Could Last 30 Years
Of course the so-called true believers and Thermageddonists deny it.
Then there is this stuff... all over the net and verifiable.
Met Office proof that global warming is still 'on pause' as climate summit confirms global temperature has stopped rising
The Mail on Sunday first revealed global temperature pause a year ago
IPCC report confirms no significant rise in global temperature since 1997
IPCC accused of sinking to 'hilarious level of incoherence'
But the IPCC insists 2016-2035 will be 0.3-0.7C hotter than 1986-2005
The global warming ‘pause’ has now lasted for almost 17 years and shows no sign of ending – despite the unexplained failure of climate scientists’ computer models to predict it.

The graph below covers the period June 1997 to July 2013. It was drawn using the
official Met Office ‘HadCRUT4’ monthly data for world average temperatures,
and shows the lack of a warming trend.

Well I'm sure that's all wonderful news from a BAU perspective, but still doesn't address let alone answer why or how anyone could assess the temperature record indicating the 10 hottest years on record were all since 1998/within last 16 years, and come to the conclusion that the heating has abated/stalled ... even if only temporarily.
Tell you what is interesting though. Decades before GW/CC became a public issue for debate or alarm bells, it was reasonably well known by those already aware of GHG induced GW that the big cruncher is CH4/methane, and so the biggest threat in the GHG induced GW scenario was the thawing of under sea floor (frozen) methane clathrates, not CO2/carbon dioxide from oxidising hydrocarbons.
In 2007 the Russian and Swedish navies found huge areas of Arctic seas with CH4/methane plumes bubbling to the surface, which then gathers in the atmosphere and holds heat at 24 times the ratio than that of CO2/carbon dioxide.
So those advocating remedial action and actually understanding the science by rights should be admitting the fight is lost, because once the frozen methane from under sea floors and permafrost are released the heating is unstoppable and will increase exponentially.
In the Earth's past, when minor GW caused thawing and release of large volumes of CH4/methane into the atmosphere, this in turn caused major GW, which usually wiped out most of the life forms on the planet.
So far I haven't heard a squeak from anyone or any org involved with addressing GW regarding the 2007 Russian and Swedish discovery and its implications.
And I suspect this silence/censure concerning the CH4/methane pushing us past the "Tipping Point" into a 'Runaway Global Warming' scenario is due to fear of the imminent and a desire for BAU.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

Yogi. Spot on, the risk of a major methane release is real and if it gets going it will have a boig effect. We will not have a runaway like Venus but sure as hell will have a major impact and there will be SFA we can do.
Mitigate the risk now.
It will be to late when the risk is realised for many many generations.

Nah, you probably didn't see or hear it because of the din caused by AGW CO2 Thermageddonists. Read a few things about it over the years. See if I can find anything recent.

Guys,
What do you think of this article. I have read it but need to absorb all it says.
Global Warming and the Gulf Stream - Our Atmospheric Pollution Roadway to Subsea Arctic Methane-Induced Climatic Hell

It's this year. It states....
Humanity has signed its death warrant and our final extinction will be carried out by Mother Earth within the next 30 to 40 years unless we immediately take extremely drastic action to entirely curb our carbon dioxide pollution, eliminate large quantities of methane from the subsea Arctic Ocean, seawater and atmosphere (down to ca 750 ppm) and revert completely to renewable energy.

Malthus did it way before you lot of alarmist pissants and was far better at it.
The alarmists have mentioned plenty of time frames over the last 20 years, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years etc...they were wrong then and they are wrong now. The question is, why are you such a gullible scrotal boil?

It would seem that the IPCC is totally schizo... on the one hand it's ramping up the warming/co2/climate fear-mongering and on the other hand they are now saying we have till the end of the century to do something about it.... Oh dear...

As a result the recent mid-term election in the States the new head of the Senate Science Committee (or whatever it is called) will be a bible-thumping anti-science climate-change denier who believes God would never let His climate change ...
