World First in Sydney

Post by Neferti » Fri Oct 24, 2014 5:32 pm

Described as the biggest heart transplant breakthrough in a decade, the successful surgery has profound implications for reducing the shortage of donor organs, the director of St Vincent’s Hospital Heart Lung Transplant Unit, Professor Peter MacDonald, said today.

Previously transplant units relied solely on donor hearts from brain dead patients whose hearts were still beating.

But the clinic has recently transplanted two hearts which were donated after circulatory death (DCD) — where the heart is no longer beating — in both cases the patients are recovering well.

Well done AUSTRALIA!

PS. Goff had nothing to do with it. :Hi

 You sure it wasn't Goughs (or even Packer Snr's)??

I worked the Medical Industry once, nothing much - just an Anus nurse (AiN), a real shit-kicker!
But I got to experience a lot, right across the board.
Once got to see a young girl hear for the first time with a hearing implant that was the 1st of its kind.
Watching the tears stream down the parent's cheeks and the look of wonder on the girl as the sounds started making sense.

Sadly, the Australian Public take the Govt funded Hospitals and their 'FREE' care for granted,
while the Private Hospitals do only 'routine' procedures and RIP people right off financially.
If there is anything wrong with the Public System, its that its littered with workers who are more interested in Politics and going on strike for another pay rise. Probably the same ones that are 'partied out' from the weekend and sneak off for smoko breaks - coming back and saying the 'work load' is too much - time for a pay rise. Besides a lack of Doctors, because they are off doing Face-Lifts and other 'vanity' jobs, the Health Industry is the one Industry that should have a ZERO TOLERANCE level of narcotics/alcohol consumption amongst its employees ...but it seems every other Industry is checked on, except the Medical. The amount of 'smokers/drinkers' I worked amongst in Hospitals was amazing and 'they' were the hard work!

I agree Mantra. It is good to see.

I think Australia can do more. We have clever people but I don't think we are the clever country anymore.

there needs to be more support for value add cleverness and while maximumise the benefit of all the resources we export. Like Oil producing countries we need to think what will we do when they no longer want our dirt.

Australians have made some very important discoveries (and inventions). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Au ... inventions

Scotland has made a lot of important discoveries and inventions as well.

Most people think the Yanks discovered just about everything.

The Submersible that took James Cameron down to the bottom of the Marianna Trench was designed and built in Pyrmont, Sydney - Australia. Australia also has the 'worlds best' Commercial Diving Academies.
