What to do about Coles & Woolworths?

Post by Jovial Monk » Wed Jul 08, 2009 4:39 pm

They hold waaaayyyy to much power, dominant in groceries, fuel & alcohol. Hope to god they do not get a fucking pharmacy licence! Yeah, they would reduce drug prices a bit but five years later we would be paying double what we used to. They are not even competent, try getting a fresh stubby of beer in BWS etc.

For a laugh, I donned full protective gear and a proxy address and had a look at what Sheepy, with an apparently straight face, calls "Political."

Ahhhh I see! Coles/Woolies getting so much market power was not the fault of govt (of course not, because that was the holy, incomparable (etc for 3 pages) Howard/Costello govt! No, they got so much power because of us consumers! Wow! So I hardly ever buy anything from them but it is my fault? I buy my food atr Farmers and Central Market but I am at fault for Coles/Woolies being so powerful? Wow, that is some insight into Sheepy's devious mind!

People forget Grocery Choice achieved one thing: showed Woolies was more expensive than Coles and got Woolies to reduce their prices a bit. But to really do it would mean including markets as well as the duopoly etc. Anti cartel laws are being introduced so eventually the govt will have the power to get the grocery duopoly to sell of large parts of itself, opening up competition.

If you can, go to Farmers Markets or central markets and get your food there, esp organic milk/meat/fruit/veg, taste better and are better for you.

Why do you have to shop with just one store? I buy stuff at various stores based on cheapness and having what I use. But i don't shop for food over the net- only few times I tried it I git things i didn't want because they didn't get the right things off the shelf.

Shopping for food on the net {shudder}

Half the fun is talking to the vendors, looking at the actual produce, getting advice about it etc etc, the bustle of markets etc etc

Or in SA.

IGA not too bad, tho mostly I buy muscovado sugar there to put in certain Packs. For $3.80/500g packet, v $6-9 at "continental" delis or "gourmet" shops.

Oh. Damn eh?

You do have farmer markets though? Otherwise, just shop at IGA or Richies or some other such entity I guess. More expensive though and some are owned by the big fella's.
