GOCE reveals gravity dip from ice loss


GOCE is short for ‘Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer’, a satellite being used by the European Space Agency (ESA) to measure the Earth’s gravity field. Its high-resolution measurement mean scientists can now look at changes in ice mass in small glacial systems – offering even greater insight into the dynamics of Antarctica’s different basins.
They have found that the loss of ice from West Antarctica between 2009 and 2012 caused a dip in the gravity field over the region. Between 2011 and 2014, Antarctica as a whole has been shrinking in volume by 125 cubic kilometres a year.

Maybe Maurice Newman would like to investigate that …
