Plenty of data around about how crap the copper is—“Bagdad” for example. Apart from that, Telstra copper is of .3 and .42mm diameter (info from Tesltra’s own wiring manual,) high speed VDSLx needs copper with a minimum diameter of .6mm.

England has joined New Zealand in changing their FTTN rollout to FTTH, just too many problems with FTTN. Try it over Telstra copper

Like I said, the copper is of poor quality and too thin. Most FTTN roll outs don’t perform well but incumbent telcos use FTTN to sweat the last bit of profit out of their copper.

NBN Co doesn’t own the copper, only a raging idiot would then recommend it run out FTTN. Fortunately—FTTH will have to be run out in most cases.

I have always agreed with you that fibre is way superior to copper for high speed communications.

The issue was the cost benefit. That is the issue.

providing fibre to the home for everyone is just not economic.

You can get a pretty good speed over coppoer for the last few miles, it just has it's limits. A great improvement over what these punters get today.

Unless you have a special need, 4 Mb is plenty for most people today. I had copper in London and 1Mb line and it was good enough for Skype, video on demand and everything I needed. I have 16Mb in Dubai. It is better for video but I don't notice the speed for browsing and email.

Fibre to home can be a second stage in the future, when it is cost justifiable.... Australia is doing the right thing and not eating the elephant all in one go.

Also, I use my 4G mobile and get brilliant internet speed access. The future has options.

That “last mile” is really more like the last 100 meters. The Germans did the FTTN well but they used over 300K nodes and the copper was thick and meticulously maintained.

None of the self–serving reports commissioned by Turnbull show FTTH as significantly dearer than FTTN. The kicker is—none of these costs included the cost to acquire, audit and remediate the copper! Worthless!

Even more worthless—the Strategic Review used costs based on overseas copper, NOT the Telstra copper!

While FTTH might be a little bit dearer this is overcome by the fact it earns significantly more revenue!

And FTTN is not a half way step to FTTH. Sorry to bust that bubble. Can’t remember where I read it, sorry, but whirlpool or one of the technical emails I get (ZDNet, IT News, IT Wire or one of two ITC blogs I read.)

Hate to tell you this Monk but there's a big difference between reading stuff, some highly biased due to vested interests and actually having industry experience and knowledge.
