Mock Obedience trial this Sunday
Last Sunday at the Obedience Club wasn't needed as trainee instructor so asked old, ummm, Fred shall we say, to me and Demi through the practice ring to Novice standard, where we are at the moment. Apart from one incident in the Stand for Exam where Demi was fast and furiously sniffing the ground, probably where another dog had had a pee (and in a trial the judge would change the routine so that spot would be avoided) Demi performed really well, nice heeling close to me and slightly back with prompt sits/stands/drops etc. So old Fred said, quite impressed and this guy has been doing dog obedience at high levels for half his life, "Ah, a little smarty"
So then the Open level handlers wanted to do a group temperament test and I put Demi in too: handlers bring dogs up to their number start peg, stand their dogs and on command leave their dogs and take position a few metres in front of the dog. The instructor/judge then goes along the line of dogs giving each, basically, a few pats on the back. The dogs are supposed to stand there during this exercise not moving a leg. Well, you would think Demi had been doing this for years, solid as a rock!
So then came the stay. I expected I would do the Novice stay, the level we are trying to get out of, but got told to leave the ring and out of sight of Demi. To everyone's surprise and admiration Demi sat there for a full minute, the length of the Novice sit-stay before getting anxious and moving in search of me.
Last night after the other dogs and handlers had left I put Demi in a sit-stay along with three other dogs and moved into the clubhouse, out of sight of Demi. Blow me down! Demi sat solid the whole three minutes with me out of sight! Radical, dood! Then the 5 minute Open drop-stay, again I was out of Demi's sight in the clubhouse and again, solid as a rock! These long, out of sight stays (5 & 7 minutes respectively in Utility) often have dogs shifting between drop and sit more than once, bombing the trial
Well, doing a mock trial this Sunday (can use food in the ring and the score does not count towards a title, otherwise same as a normal trial) at a high school in Adelaide's north. Hopefully Demi does well there as there are two real trials on the next two Sundays!
Wish us luck!
In the clubhouse last night I had a bit of a whinge about the trainee instructor thing. I know our Head Instructor has a hubby dying of cancer but hopefully someone can be delegated to look after us trainees. Just helping out with classes is fine, but we get absolutely no feedback on how we are doing, what sort of a program exists (none) that sees us certified as full Instructors etc.
I do love instructing, helping. Last night before the lesson started I helped a Grade 2er improve her hand signals, esp the stand and drop. Her dog not doing the drop properly yet, I showed her how to use a treat to encourage the dog to drop. A lot of handlers, esp I am afraid the women, are to soft on their dog. Dogs are pack animals, the handler & fam are the dog's pack and by nature the dog wants to try to be pack leader--dog must be put in its place, and commands like 'drop' 'sit' and 'stand' etc must be commands, said in a clear, even slightly growly, voice. But you here these handlers, they are more or less ASKING their dog--it will never work folks! The dog is expressing its social/hierarchical nature, trying to be dominant. But it cannot really be the pack leader and the dog is never happy, never really learns. Ah well.

Stoopid dog! Kept breaking away in the heeling part of the trial, no idea why.
Did the recall, stand for exam and drop from a distance a treat, 30/30, 30/30 and 27/30, damn good!
Oh well, next two Sundays are real trials, wish me luck!
Went to Earthdog, Demi quite enthusiastic but got lost in the long Novice tunnel system, didn't get the rabbit! I need to dig a bit of a tunnel system at home and make Demi navigate it to get her dinner
On the way back a big bloody prang on the South Rd/Torrens Rd intersection meant I had to divert from the direct route home. A very quick glance I counted 3 ambulances then another one came up. Saw a glimpse of one mangled car. Can't say I am surprised. The lack of police on the road means idiots are always barging through on 'late amber' and even red lights! Just needs another impatient retard wanting to turn right and BANG! The intersection has a redlight/speed camera, sigh. . .

What's Earthdog?
The better I get to know people, the more I find myself loving dogs.
Re: Mock Obedience trial this Sunday
Earthdog is a system of small (9" x 9") tunnelsset just below ground level that dogs (the smaller terriers, dashunds etc) travel to find the lure (a dead rabbit) and as such right up Demi's street with her Jack Russel heritage.

Sounds like fun. Also like sci-fi.

Hehehehehe
Is good, is Don!
Will take a couple pics next test/practice session.
Couple of other things I want to do, join the tracking club: Demi ain't no bloodhound of course but she can smell out a rat or lizard! Then will also join the Jack Russell club--apparently they have lots of 'fun days' where dogs chase an artificial lure, bit like greyhound races. The more we can do, the more bonds and so hopefully less @#$*! running away in trials!

Re: Mock Obedience trial this Sunday
Sitting here at work, about to head off to an obedience practice session. See if can get help to have Demi do a complete trial
In summer I leave at 5.30 and we go on a long walk but bugger that for now, cold outside!
Tomorrow another practice session, incl going through a practice ring.
Sunday another trial, will enter Demi in two more, held by Rottweiler and German Shepherd clubs: Demi might provide a nice snack to a Rotti or Shepherd if she does her running away shit again

.....and you have the gall to whinge about how often Frogen posts about having a drink or two.
Since you have been here, I'll bet your posts about dogs far exceed what Frogen has posted about being pissed.

Actually, Aussie, I had a good reason to post about Frogen's 'drunk' posts.
Anyway, been reading quite a few dog obedience training books and last night I read something that I think could well be the key. Demi isn't getting enough exercise! Last year, quite dry and mostly sunny in Adelaide, I took Demi for several long walks, in the Adelaide Hills in winter and the Torrens River Linear Park when it got warmer and snakes were about in the Ad. Hills. This year has been wet! No long walks!
So, Sunday I will take Demi and do a nice long walk, 12-14Km, regardless of rain! Can do this as my local club is shut until next Wed as a dog with kennel cough took part in the lesson last Wed week.
Will see how that changes thing in the Mock trial Sunday week!
