Immigration and Multiculturalism

You don't migrate to this country unless you want to join our team': Tony Abbott renews push on national security laws
Date August 18, 2014 - 11:57AM

Mr Abbott will meet Muslim communities in Sydney on Monday and in Melbourne this week in a bid to quell disquiet about the government's counter-terrorism plans.

In an interview with Sydney radio station 2GB, Mr Abbott harked back to a term he used earlier this month when announcing enhanced national security laws, saying "everyone has got to be on team Australia".

He went on to say "everyone has got to put this country, its interests, its values and its people first, and you don't migrate to this country unless you want to join our team". It all sounds like One Nation and Pauline Hanson to me. Hanson and One Nation spoke about people coming to this country becoming Australian, wanting to be Australian and about the disunity Multiculti allows and fosters.

Mr Abbott was asked what should be done if someone in Australia was discovered to be flying a flag for a terrorist organisation over their home or business.

"I don't know what the legal position is but frankly the only flag that should be flying is the Australian national flag," Mr Abbott said. One country, One people, One nation was Hanson's cry.

Mr Abbott said the government had to be vigilant in addressing the "serious problem of radicalised people going to the Middle East to fight with terrorist groups" and then trying to return to Australia.

"What we need to do is to encourage the moderate mainstream to speak out," he said.

"Overwhelmingly, our country is comprised of good decent people who want to put Australia and its people first, and it's important that individual communities can't be caricatured on the basis of a militant few." It is important that they see themselves as Australian.

The Prime Minister’s renewed pitch to moderate Muslims comes after anger at the proposed new terrorism laws, which were linked to the abandonment of changes to race-hate laws.

The Lebanese Muslim Association has described the proposed national security powers as "deplorable" and vowed to fight them because they are "widely perceived to target Muslims".

The Australian National Imans Council has joined the criticism, saying it believes the proposed changes will "severely impinge" on the rights and freedoms of all Australians but "especially those of Muslim faith".

Mr Abbott's focus on national security this week comes as government MPs continue negotiations over blocked budget measures, with the Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop and acting Assistant Treasurer Mathias Cormann signalling there could be adjustments to get key budget measures passed.

On Monday, the Prime Minister told how the government planned to reach a compromise over unpopular budget measures with the Senate crossbench when it had to negotiate with the Palmer United Party, led by the unpredictable Clive Palmer.

Mr Abbott said the government had to deal with ''the parliament you've got'' but it would not sell out the ''fundamentals'' of the budget it handed down in May.

''We're prepared to talk to the crossbench senators. What we're not prepared to do, though, is sell out the fundamentals and the fundamentals are that we have absolutely got to get this budget crisis back under control,'' Mr Abbott said.

"Even Clive Palmer was using the term 'crisis' last week.

''So what I say to all of the crossbench senators is: if you don't like what the government is putting up, give us your alternative in terms of how we save money.

''And there were some alternatives that came up from one of the crossbench members of the Federal Parliament, and frankly, they didn't stack up for five minutes.''

Muslims belong in muslim countries and we would be none the worse off if every last one of them packed up and left for greener pastures ... and the budget is mostly good...that Is all :beer . The next federal election will prove that the majority of Australians believe this.

Good. I have absolutely no objection to Asylum Seekers. The World is full of displaced persons. Australia has tons of room for those who want to WORK , fit in and make a new life for themselves and feel safe.

I do, however, strongly object to the so called "boat people" who pay large sums of money to crooks to get here and are mostly Muslim. Or those who arrive via plane with falsified documents.

I think we need WW3 to bomb the shit out of the Middle East ... including Israel. They are breeding like rabbits over there and ISLAM is their favourite thing.

You mean Australia is a large continent? or we have plenty of job vacancies? When in fact there are 10 unemployed persons for every job vacancy and still we have people coming in from outside and taking jobs. fit in and make a new life for themselves and feel safe. But under multiculti they don't have to "fit in" they just have to be tolerated by the rest of us.

You make it almost impossible to reply, Rorschach by adding bits rather than "quoting".

Anyway, regarding the JOB situation, there are plenty out there. You need to WANT a job and not be too fussy or precious about it. For a start, stop telling employers how "qualified" you are. Check jobs that are NOT in what you are "qualified" to do ... change your perspective. Look at, maybe, eventually becoming The Manager at some retail outlet but starting off as a salesperson? You have the maturity and experience, get a foot in the door ....

I know someone who just got a job (1st she had applied for) after not working (bringing up kids) for the last 7 years. She actually had to turn one down as the other one had better hours. This is not a career position but it is a JOB, local so no travel costs as such and brings in more than $500+ a week.

Surely, ANYTHING is better than the Dole?

Rubbish and the older you are the harder they are to get. And as I stated the job seeker numbers are far greater than the jobs available... that is the point.

Really... are you giving me advice? Or just generally?
Maturity and experience doesn't get your foot in the door these days. In many instances you are seen as too old, too expensive and sometimes even a threat. The dole queues are stacked with older people. Remember the youth unemployment even at its worst is 25%... guess who the other 75% are.
BTW what makes you think most people don't try all sorts of things to get a job. Personally I draw the line at lying. As for your advice... never did use the look how qualified I am ploy, but employers do want to know your qualifications if you have them. I applied for all sorts of jobs in all sorts of industries, nothing is wrong with my perspective, and I always have started at the bottom... so yes, a waste of time telling me. If that's what you were doing.

Have always worked close to home nef. When on Newstart I would have loved such a job.
Surely, ANYTHING is better than the Dole?
Surely anything over $250 a week is... YOU cannot live on Newstart.

Meanwhile back on topic... Australians should be employed before blowins.
Australians should be trained before blowins.
